This stotra (hymn which praises) occursin Brahmanda purana (Old epic of theuniverse) in the Chapter on discussion between Hayagreeva and Agasthya.Hayagreeva is an incarnation of Vishnuwith the horse head and is believed to be thestorehouse of knowledge. Agasthya is one of the great sages of lore who is one of thestars of the constellation Great Bear. At hisrequest Hayagreeva taught him the mostholy 1000 names of Lalitha.Parama shiva is one of the trinity of Hindu pantheons who is in charge of destruction. He married Sathi , the daughter of Daksha.
Daksha and Paramashiva were notgetting on well and consequently he did notinvite Paramashiva for one of the great firesacrifices that he conducted. However Sathiwent to attend the function in spite of Paramashiva’s protest. Daksha insulted her husband and she jumped in to the fire andended her life. Consequently at the behest of Paramashiva Daksha was killed and later given life with a goat’s head. However thisincident upset Paramashiva and he enteredinto deep meditation. Sathi took birth as thedaughter of the mountain(Parvathy)Himalayas and started doing penance onShiva for getting him as her husband. Thedevas faced a very great enemy in SuraPadma who had a boon that he could bekilled only by a son of Shiva and Parvathy. So to wake Shiva from his deep meditationthe devas deputed Manmatha , the God of love who shot his flower arrows atParamashiva. Paramashiva woke up andopened his third eye and burnt the God of love into ashes.
