or almost 50 years, two compassionate brothershave joined with the North Shore-LIJ Health Sys-tem in its mission to keep pace with the increasingdemand for top-quality healthcare in our region.Beginning with the purchase of an X-ray machine for NorthShore University Hospital (NSUH) in memory of their father,Maurice (“Sonny”) Cohn of Manhasset and Milton (“Bud”)Cohn of Kings Point — along with their wives, Marilyn andLucille — have proven that generosity runs in the family by supporting a wide variety of initiatives throughout the healthsystem. Most recently, the Cohns funded enhancements to theemergency departments of NSUH and LIJ Medical Center.Due to the benevolence of Marilyn and Sonny Cohn, a life-time trustee, in 2002 North Shore-LIJ celebrated the comple-tion of the Marilyn and Maurice Cohn Trauma Center — thefirst phase of an ongoing multi-million dollar upgrade to theemergency department at NSUH. “Almost everyone has a story about visiting the emergency room at some point in their lives, and so I felt it would be very worthwhile and practical to giveback to the community in this manner,” said Sonny. A reflection of the Cohns’ profound concern for the well-being of others, the 15,000-square-foot, three-levelMarilyn and Maurice Cohn Trauma Center provides 14private observation, evaluation and treatment rooms designedto maximize comfort for patients and their loved ones. Thecenter also includes a 60-seat teaching facility for the purposeof educating professionals in the field of emergency medicine.Inspired to further the family tradition of underwritingtop-quality emergency healthcare on Long Island, in 2005Lucille and Bud Cohn made a gift endowing the Dorothy and Max Cohn Trauma Center at LIJ — honoring Sonny orBud’s late parents. “I decided that my parents deserved tohave something so important named after them,” said Bud.Comprising four state-of-the-art trauma rooms, theDorothy and Max Cohn Trauma Center is part of therecently constructed 18,000-square-foot addition to theemergency department at LIJ, which features a larger waitinglobby, more accessible parking lot and new decontaminationarea. Last year’s opening marked the completion of the firstphase of a major expansion project that will eventually doublethe size of the emergency department. The remarkably charitable nature shared by the Cohnbrothers will help ensure that patients served by bothNSUH and LIJ always have access to the finest treatmentat a moment’s notice.
