Like one’s social status in high school, a royal status can be replaced instantly by a moreupdated fancier person, such as with Margarita and what was to come for her with her brotherCharles. In the particular time frame Velazquez would have probably thought she wouldeventually replace the King and Queen as the new leader. However, this was later disprovedwhen the Queen had another son by the name of Charles. For now, however, the beautifulMargarita is placed at the center of attention, a shining beacon of upcoming power in comparisonto her adoring maids of honour. Also, as with many popular paintings, the usage of light versusdark is utilized to represent one’s level of power. Knowing this, it is justified as to whyVelazquez is in a dark shade of color as a painter than the other characters in the painting andMargarita stands out with her bright colors. Even the King and Queen barely amount to herblonde brilliance. What may be surprising though is how Velazquez bears the red cross belongingthose who are part of the Order of Santiago, a high honor bestowed solely by the present King.Turns out the cross was actually added by someone (legend has it it was King Philip himself)later after Velazquez had already died, perhaps to further revitalize Velazquez’s underminedimportance in the royal family as a lowly but well connected friend. Lastly, when it comes to themost top-tier people in the painting, the King and Queen, an idealized impression is set as theirfaces are reflected in the mirror, most likely from Velazquez’s painting, and thereforesuccessfully maintains how they were balanced considerate rulers of Spain.
As for the personal aspect in relations with the painting, I almost feel indifferent. However, I argue I may be biased considering I have never seen the piece in its entirety, all125.2
