 TRIP TO THE TOWER.Ingrid sat next to youon the school hired coachto the Tower of Londonsun pouredthrough the windowmaking you feel hotterand Ingridwho usually smeltof dampnesssmelt of orangesfresh peeledher usual well wornraincoat and cardiganwere goneand she was clothedin a creamy blouseand green skirtand off white socksand plimsolls(her shoes inthe shoe smithbeing mendedshe had said)and you in a greyopen neck shirtand grey flannelshort trousers(no jeansthe teacher said
 
the day before)and once all the kidswere aboardand the teachershad counted headsthe coach took off and the talking eruptedand voices filled the airand laughter and chatterand you looked by Ingridat the passing viewshe looked out tooher hair you noticedwashed and combedand on her lapin a bagher packed lunchand she heldthe bag tightlyand you noticedher fingersthe nails bittenbut the ink stains goneand she turnedand said how excitedshe was and thatshe'd never beento the Tower beforeand that her dad had saidshe wouldn't have goneif her mother hadn't paid
 
and moaningabout the costand don't we have enoughto pay what withone thing and anotherand she loweredher voiceand whisperedthat her dad had hit herfor wanting to goand her mother toofor interferingand she pulled upher skirt and showed youa bruise on her thighthen she looked awayand was silentand you thoughtthat if you saw himyou'd have pop himone with your cap gun(symbolic of course)then she turnedand said notto tell anyoneand you saidyou wouldn'tand she smiledand squeezed your handand you hoped
