Working hard under piles of books and catching up with the rapid city beat are quite excruciating. How Ihoped for a break to just chill out and set myself free!Undoubtedly, the Sentosa outing brought an indelible experience for me, liberating me from the chokingstress derived from study for a long time. Anticipation for a warm sunshine and the smell of a burningsand kept me awake the night before. On board the express train to Sentosa and seeing myself going farther away from the city, I couldn'tcontain the excitement t see the fantastic world that awaited me. The moment we arrived, everyone hadgone mad!Amusingly, taking photos had become everybody's ticket to socialize. I took photos of almost everyone--my friends and my new-found-friends. These photos would be a sound proof that, I had once lived andfound good friends in Singapore. The time went by like a breeze while playing games, chasing each other and laughing at jokes. For thefirst time in my life, I was pushed into the sea by a friend and accidentally drank a bit of seawater. To theamusement of everybody. They laughed and I didn't care. I actually thought it was funny! As the daylight faded, we sat by the shore and gazed at the sun sinking into the western sun. The momentreminded me of my homeland far from here. Flashback of my high school years came by. I remember thepromise that my friends and I in Senior HS had made--”Carpe Deim” -- to do our best and fight for ourdreams.
Anyway, I felt so contented having a great breakaway weekend at Sentosa with my new-found-friends.

 The Event
The day started ideally. It was the first day of Term 2. Students streamed in their high school uniform for the first time ever. They did notknow that Monday 6th was a Civil Defence day exercise. After the usual Assembly, the high school students were led to the School Hall for the first module: Fire Safety and Casualty Evacuation. Themodule started with a video clip showing the causes of domestic disasters with dramatic reenactments which captured the imagination of all. This module was followed with a round of lecture and quiz on casualty evacuation. After Module 3, the officers proceeded smoothly to Module 4 which was Emergency Procedures. Here the senior officer, Captain Ashari, briefed the students on peacetime emergencies that can happen locally in Singapore and in their home countries. Then other junior officersbriefed the students stockpiling of essential items for emergencies as well as the Singapore’s Public Warning System.
Synopsis
As part of our offering to our students to be better members of the community, both in Singapore and their home countries, we have included the CommunityEmergency Preparedness Programme, in which our students will learn first handfrom Civil Defence officers the causes of civil disasters and how to respond tosuch disasters.Preliminary communication was engaged with Liutenant Shahdele Ismanregarding this programme as early as October 2008. Finally both the SCDF andShelton High School agreed on the date and the extent of the programme.

Then students were given their first taste of action that day.The students were led to the car park and were given a demonstration on fire fighting using the variousfire extinguishers. Then student volunteers were called to put out the fire. Then students were given their lunch break. After lunch, the Civil Defence paramedics took over the teaching of Module 1 which is first aid. Alecture with very informative photographs about injuries was highlighted to the students. Again thiscaptured the imagination. After this a demonstration on first aid was given. There was even acompetition organized for the students on which team could bandage their partner well. Finally the last Module was taught to the students. This was Module 2: One Man Cardio PulmonaryResuscitation. Here the paramedics showed the students the proper and correct way to respond toemergency situations where the first aider has to perform CPR.As the rain drizzled to a trickle, the exercise ended. We at Shelton High School thanked the SCDF fortheir excellent programme.
