Borobudur is a stupa on top of a layered shrine

The word Borobudur is probably derived from 2 separate words vihara and beduhur. Vihara, which later became biara, means a complex of buildings or a dormitory, and beduhur, which eventually became budur, means an elevated plain or a site upon a hill. The combination of these 2 words has come to mean a monastery upon a hill-Borobudur. The precise origin of this word, nevertheless, is still a subject of numerous arguments among experts. On the Monument Sri Kahulunan (824 AD) was inscribed the word bhumisambhara and actually there should be another word bhudara to make up Borobudur. Bumisegara, the name of a compound at the southern foot of Borobudur, could probably be traced back to the word bhumisambhara
