Forum Building
Address Avinguda Diagonal 1 08019 Barcelona Spain http://www.barcelona2004.org/

The Forum Building is a triangular measuring 180 meters on each side and 25 meters in height, located within the triangle formed by the surrounding streets. It is considered by some to be an icon of the "New Barcelona ". However, local opinion on its aesthetic and functional merits is deeply divided. It was the symbol of the controversial 2004 Universal Forum of Cultures and the serious flaws that arose during its construction were widely covered in both the Spanish national and foreign press. It has lain empty since the Forum and is beginning to show marked deterioration. The building is structured around an auditorium with a capacity to hold 3,200 people. The seating is below the Forum Plaza level. The upper part is suspended from the triangular superstructure measuring 180 meters per side that covers the plaza, and rests on 17 pillars. From it, the exhibit hall and the roof of the auditorium are suspended. The exhibition hall covers nearly 5,000 m2.

Schaulager
Address Ruchfeldstrasse 19 CH-4142 Basel Switzerland http://www.schaulager.org/
photo: Naomi Schiphorst

The Schaulager ('viewing warehouse') is neither museum nor traditional warehouse. It keeps the Emanuel Hoffmann collection in optimal condition and is primarily accessible for specialists: conservators, curators, researchers etc. The heavy outer wall is built up in layers and its outer surface scratched, exposing the pebbles excavated on site. This material is not only a visual expression of weight and storage but also, as a result of its great inertia, an essential factor in the interior climate control. On one side the box is somewhat indented, creating a forecourt, so that the entrance side is visible from great distance. It appears to be guarded by a small building with a gabled roof. The courtyard-like space radiates urbanism and publicness. Schaulager is thus not simply an anonymous box on the urban periphery, but rather a place that is active and self-confident, expanding the public dimension of the city of Basel to the south, towards the new district of Dreispitz/Mnchenstein.

International Convention Center (CCIB)

Address Avinguda Diagonal 1 08019 Barcelona Spain http://www.ccib.es/

This multi-purpose cultural building includes a very large auditorium, a multi-functional performing space, exhibition spaces, meeting rooms, and a restaurant and foyer, in addition to technical services, loading docks, storage spaces, and car parking on two levels. It was part of the controversial 2004 Universal Forum of Cultures in Barcelona and has 45 translucent halls, spread over 3 floors, 2 mezzanines and a basement. The CCIB and the neighboring building Forum Auditorium (by Swiss architects Herzog and De Meuron), are linked to each other by a 20-meter-wide underground walkway. Mateo 'explains': I have gone back to loving the precision of iron: normal, but monstrous, banal but not domestic, superhuman. The mega structure is seen proudly in the East faade, opposite the elegant neighbouring triangle. The bones are covered in the rest of the building.

Tate Modern
Address Bankside Jetty SE1 9TG London United Kingdom http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/

The former Bankside power station consists of a huge turbine hall, a thirty-five m high and 152 m long entrance area with ramped access, as well as a display space for very large sculptural projects. Parallel to it the boiler house, where now the galleries are housed. Above the original roofline of the power station the then relatively little known Swiss architects added a two-storey glass penthouse; the lightbeam. This houses a caf-restaurant with stunning views of the river and the City, and the lower a membersroom with terraces on both sides of the building. The chimney was capped by a coloured light feature designed by the artist Michael Craig-Martin, known as the Swiss Light. The redevelopment of the redundant Bankside Power Station is a key to the regeneration of the area. Tate Modern is the national gallery of international modern art. Located in London, it is one of the family of 4 Tate galleries which display selections from the Tate Collection.

An English Square
Address Bankside Jetty 1 SE1 9TG London United Kingdom http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/

With the change of use of the power station, a formerly inaccessible terrain was turned into a place that is now used by the public. Zurich based Vogt Landschaftsarchitekten designed the outside space next to the Tate Modern (redesigned for reuse by Herzog and De Meuron). They created a series of gardens with birch trees and a square: The birch trees create a spatial complexity of confinement and expansiveness and create the familiar picture of an alluvial forest. At the same time, the birches are pioneer trees on urban and industrial vacant lots. The groups of foreign trees, with their different coloured barks and irregular placement, contradict the usual connotation of this tree. The design of the various types of gardens is part of a typical London tradition of urban gardens. It is neither a public square nor a private garden but a hybrid: an English square.

Folding Landscape
Address Creekside SE 8 3DZ London United Kingdom http://www.laban.org

photo: Naomi Schiphorst

The Laban dance school is located in Deptford, an industrial district to the southwest of London. The design of the garden in front of the building by Herzog and De Meuron reflects the interior of the building, which is characterized by ramps. The way to the main entrance of the building leads in a slightly zigzag course through a hilly landscape created by bending and folding. The sloping lawns and geometric hills form a lively landscape. As in a natural landscape, chains of hills and dales form extremely dissimilar situations that can be variously used, for example the lawn steps as a performance room in the sense of an amphitheatre. The modeling of the ground also made it possible to dispose of the existing, contaminated soil on the building side of the site at a reasonable cost. The decision to refrain from planting trees was based on ecological considerations: a rare bird, the black redstart, would otherwise have been hunted by birds of prey lurking in the trees.

Allianz Arena
Address Werner-Heisenberg-Allee 25 80939 Munich Germany http://www.allianz-arena.de

Built in a record time of 30 months, the Allianz Arena is one of the most modern and architecturally unique football stadiums in Europe. It has not only captivated football fans, but many others with its breathtaking architecture and spectacular illuminated facade. Swiss architects Herzog and De Meuron designed the building purely as football stadium. The faade and roof is a composition of transparent and translucent ETFE laminate panels on a steel supporting structure. Every panel has a transparent inner. Those forming the facade have a translucent white outer, but the roof panels are completely transparent, allowing sunshine and light to fall onto the pitch. The stadium is lighted in the colours of the two Munich clubs (FC Bayern Mnchen red colour and TSV 1860 blue) who have their home-base in this arena; white for national games. Capacity of the Arena is 69.000, unique 3-tier Arena in Germany with a great closeness to the pitch through a high inclination of the tiers.

REHAB Basel
Address Im Burgfelderhof 40 4056 Basel Switzerland http://www.rehab.ch

You expect clinics to look, well, clinical, modernist, austerely immaculate boxes, hygienically white inside and out. REHAB Basel is a privately run rehabilitation clinic for patients with spinal-cord or brain injuries, they can stay here up to 18 months. It appears residential and natural, though not with a funky, down-home earthiness, but crispy modern. Here, oak, pine, larch, and ironwoods enclose and screen exterior walls, and a rectilinear plan brings daylight and landscape into its precincts through courtyards, grassy roofs, glazed walls, upper-level decks, and skylights. The double and single rooms have daylight from above and an outside balcony. The indoor swimming pool offers views into the sky from a pyramid-like dome above. The floors are very wide, open giving wheelchair-bound patients a sense of autonomy. Almost a place where anyone would like to live.

Institute for Hospital Pharmaceuticals

Address Spitalstrasse 28 4056 Basel Switzerland

The Hospital Pharmacie (in German: Institut fr Spitalpharmazie) houses offices, labs and production. The building is placed on the Rossetti-grounds, and presents itself to the street with a green monumental shield. The building marks the entrance to the city, from the Spital-side. The position of the elevator, stairs and entrance side for services was determined by the existing building from the 1960s. The faade is made with glass, covered by a Chromogenic colour print. If you come close, you can see the structure of the print on the green, semi transparent building surface.

Address Schutzenmattstrasse 11 4051 Basel Switzerland

Sinuous cast-iron screens are used in the faade of this apartment building. They resemble drain grilles. This inventive use of unexpected but ordinary and readily available things is typical for the work of Herzog and De Meuron. "Something mysterious is revealed in the normality of everyday life".

St. Jakob Park is the stadium where FC Basel play. "Joggeli" as it is nicknamed, has a current capacity of 39'000 seats. Switzerland's first multi-purpose stadium, was inaugurated in 2001 after just two and half years under construction. Situated on the south-eastern edge of the city in extensive park and recreation grounds, the world-renowned Basel architects Herzog & De Meuron have constructed an "experience park", which, with its unique dimension, bold architecture and ultramodern infrastructure, provides the optimum setting for large-scale events. It combines a football stadium with shops and restaurants.

Helvetia Headquarters
Address Dufourstrasse 40 9000 Sankt Gallen Switzerland

Simple but yet complex, one of the best works by this Swiss practice can be found in St. Gallen. The recipe is simple: take a simple form of building and give it a nice skin. Using a series of repetitive modules, the architects create a faade that decomposes the site, the context, the surroundings. The different angle of each module creates this effect, which is emphasized by the beautiful "savage" garden that neighbours the buildings.

Birds Nest National Stadium

Address Olympic Green Beijing China http://en.beijing2008.cn/

The National Stadium is dubbed the "bird's nest" because of the appearance of its innovative grid formation. The twig-like structural elements and the bowl-shaped roof are the masterpiece of the project, yet they posed great challenges for technicians and workers to make the building stand on its own feet. The National Stadium will host the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies, and athletics and football competitions. After the Olympic Games, it will become a center for sports and cultural activities and other creative industries. Its post-Games use is under extensive planning. A four-star hotel is to be built on the northern side of the stadium's stands. When completed, it will accommodate spectators who want to experience the night elegance of the "Bird's Nest."

Central Signal Box

Address Mnchensteinerstrasse Basel Switzerland

This is a railway utility building in Basel, near the Guterbahnhof Wolf called Signal Box and has an exterior cladding of copper strips that are twisted at certain places to admit daylight. Herzog and De Meuron won the Pritzker prize in 2001, the jury explained: "The beginnings of most architects practices consists by necessity of small projects with budgets to match. It is these early buildings with great constraints that test an architects talent for original solutions to often ordinary and utilitarian commissions. In the case of Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, the railroad signal box was such a project. They transformed a nondescript structure in a railroad yard into a dramatic and artistic work of industrial architecture, captivating both by day and night."

Address Rue de l'Ill 68100 Mulhouse France http://www.ricola.com/index.cfm?uuid=980EB29A2B351571E8 9BB33A63B4A4B3

This is a packing and distribution building for Ricola Europe in Mulhouse-Brunstatt. When the Swiss decided against joining the EU economic area in a referendum held in 1992, it became necessary for Ricola to set up a sales company in the EU and to build a hall for Ricola Europe in neighbouring France. This hall was built in a few months in 1995. It is situated on the periphery of Mulhouse, on the west bank of the Rhine-Rhne Canal, facing Brunstatt. It is a simple building, 60 m long, 30 m wide an 8 m high. The roof projects outwards and slightly upwards for 8 m on each of the two long sides. It creates large, protected areas, those facing into the yard being used for loading and unloading the trucks, and those facing a small park for rest periods. Here, the roof is of a material which allows the light through, so that these areas are bathed in soft light. (text from website Ricola)

Address Baselstrasse 91 4242 Laufen Switzerland http://www.ricola.com/index.cfm?uuid=981794192B351571ED 13FB7F610F47C6

This is a mechanized warehouse had to be built for herbs and herbal throat drops. The structure appears to rest on ribs which can be seen protruding below the bottom-most of these layers. They are attached to the slab which has been cast directly on the rocky ground forming the foundation of the warehouse. Because of the open structure which is formed, the yellow colour of the thermal insulation can be detected between the panels. The only exception to this is on the side exposed to the weather, where a silver foil offers additional protection against moisture. The architects have given various reasons for the shape of the shell. All of them have to do with the stacking of materials: planks piled to dry, or panels of cement, or even the shelves of the new hall. In images like these, which they called upon when creating the design, the function and construction of the warehouse are rendered congruent in a complex fashion. (text from website Ricola)

The Gallery for a Private Collection of Modern Art, Goetz Collection in Munich, of 1992 is a free-standing volume that can be used as both a public and a private gallery. The architectural conception for the building is derived from the collection of works that have been assembled, namely, art from the 1960s to the present. Situated in a park like area of birches and conifers, the gallery appears as a simple flush-detailed form, yet upon closer inspection reveals itself as a complex study in composition. Cottbus University Library

Address karl-marx strasse 43 03044 Cottbus Germany http://www.tu-cottbus.de/einrichtungen/de/ikmz/

An organic, amoeba-like form, it is not immediately obvious which is the front and which is the rear of the building. Inside, too, the seven upper and two basement levels of the library are all different in design: only their external form stays the same. But it is not only the design of the academic library - with its brightly coloured spiral staircase coiling upwards - which is unique; so too is its organisational form. The Information, Communication and Media Center (ICMC) at Brandenburg Technical University in Cottbus creates close proximity between areas which other universities have traditionally kept apart - in both physical and institutional terms. Behind the milky glass faade, imprinted with letters from many alphabets, the library, multimedia centre, computer centre and data processing unit all work hand in hand. Elsssertor II
Address Centralbahnstrasse 4 4051 Basel Switzerland

This commercial and office building next to Basel's main train station sits between the train tracks and the Centralbahnstrasse, a major thoroughfare. The faades along the building's length (facing the street and the tracks) consist of floor-height glass panels tilted at various angles, giving off a fractured reflection of the surrounding historic context. The shorter sides of the building are indented to allow for open public space. These faades are a double-skin, with the outer layer of glass screen-printed with a colored dot pattern (red on one side, blue on the other). This gives a soft colored glow to the exterior, but (unlike tinted glass) allows clear daylight into the office interior.

Prada Aoyama epicenter

Address Minami-Aoyama 5-2-6 107-0062 Tokyo Japan http://www.prada.com/

Haute couture and star architecture have grown to understand each other rather well in the recent years. Major fashion brands distinguish themselves by inviting world leading architects to indulge themselves in the design of flagshipstores and extravagant showrooms. The highest density worldwide of such state of the art showpieces can arguably be found on and around Tokyo's Omotesando. One of the most impressive contributions to this phenomenon is the Prada 'epicenter'. This 33 meter high building has a faade like a membrane which is built out of wedge shaped elements that frame flat, convex and concave windows. These element also form the outer structure of the building. Closed horizontal bracings not only make the frame rigid, but also house the more private dressing rooms within this transparent building. Everything about the building tells us that money was not an issue. But perhaps the most costly design choice of all was to leave a large part of the expensive plot un-built.

This is the first project in Paris by the Herzog De Meuron team on an unusual site in the 14th Arrondisement not far from Gare Montparnesse. The result of a 1966 competition sponsored by the Paris public housing agency Rgie Immobilire de la Paris (RVIP), the project is built on three interconnected parcels that include infill sites on two sides of a long perimeter block that face a long narrow plot on the interior of the block. The infill buildings are built to the neighbourhood height of 7 floors, while the interior slab is only 3 floors in height. Entry to the interior of the block is made beneath the infill buildings. In addition to the 4 story difference in building height, the long narrow block designed as a free-standing element in a long narrow garden and is protected with curving rolling wooden blinds that are in sharp contrast to the folding metal blinds that cover the faades of the street buildings. The three buildings contain about 60 flats and basement parking.

MoMa Museum of Modern Art

Address West 53 Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues 11 New York New York 10019-5497 United States http://www.moma.org/

Founded in 1929 as an educational institution, The Museum of Modern Art is dedicated to being the foremost museum of modern art in the world. Japanese architect Taniguchi won a competition in 1997 to redesign the MoMa, beating out ten other internationally renowned architects, including Rem Koolhaas, Bernard Tschumi, and Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron. The MoMA commission was his first work outside Japan. Taniguchi's beautiful and bold design reflects the unique vitality of midtown Manhattan and sensitively draws upon and transforms the language of modernism. Highlights include larger, more flexible, sky-lit galleries for contemporary art; architecturally distinctive galleries for masterpieces of modern art; and prominent and more comprehensive areas for study, research, and educational endeavors.

Address Bond Street 40 New York New York 10012 United States http://www.40bond.com/

This luxury apartment building on 40 Bond Street in New York, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, is a sparkling reinterpretation of the traditional cast iron and brick loft buildings of the surrounding area. The 11-storey building contains 27 luxury apartments and 5 townhouses, creating a new typology of apartments which combine housing with the services and amenities of a 5-star hotel. The faade is constructed of concrete wrapped in blackened copper and luminescent curved glass. The materials of the faade have been treated in numerous ways which create an ornamental ground floor and shimmering upper floors that respond to changes in light. At street level the private entrances to the townhouses are protected by a large cast aluminium graffiti-inspired gate. The building fits comfortably into its context by reinterpreting the typical Noho loft buildings and their materiality whilst standing out through the interesting and unique use of new materials and manufacturing processes.

Five Courtyards
Address Theatinerstrasse 14 80333 Munich Germany http://www.fuenfhoefe.de

In the 20th century this area used to be Munich's central banking district. As the various banks merged into one it was suddenly found that the entire area belonged to one entity. So in 1998 the HypoVereinsbank decided to move their offices elsewhere and transform the remaining buildings into a modern center for shopping, restaurants & cafes, art galleries (among which the Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung), office space, and residential apartments and public art. This network of passages and inner courtyards is an absolute pleasure to stroll through. The Fnf Hfe is literally an area of five connected courtyards. Every section has its own character. In one area there are giant ivies over 10 meters long - hanging from the ceiling. Another courtyard is actually a hortus conclusus. Many other designers contributed to the gesamtkunstwerk.

Aargauer Kunsthaus Extension

Address Aargauerplatz 1 5001 Aarau Switzerland http://www.ag.ch

The Aargauer Kunsthaus, originally built in 1959, became increasingly unable to cope with the constant expansion of the collection and the dynamism of the exhibition programme. After several years of planning, therefore, a unique extension designed by internationally renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron and the artist Rmy Zaugg was opened in 2003. The building represents a harmonious blend of old and new, a mixture of park and city, resulting from a careful analysis of the urban surroundings. While the entrance area and foyer, with the two winding staircases, make a spectacular, open and inviting impact, the architecture of the exhibition rooms recedes into the background, so to speak. The Aargauer Kunsthaus has a total of 3000 square metres of exhibition space (twice as much as before the extension) at its disposal in bright spacious rooms (text fom project's website).

This project, due to open in early 2010, is a Herzog and De Meuron-designed mixed-use building. 1111 Lincoln Road will be a jutting, strutting building, a study in form and structure. All muscle without clothing, according to Jacques Herzog. It will reinterpret the essence of Tropical Modernism-crisp structures and ocean-liner planes with an original, modern twist. Angular exterior cutouts will allow natural light and the Miami landscape within, infusing the 13 retail spaces, 4 restaurant spaces, 4 residential units and parking garage with a dynamic energy. Car access will curve through the center cavity and panoramic layouts will display retail units and spectacular city views. Located on Lincoln Road, Miami Beach's premier pedestrian promenade, the building will offer an entirely new context for retail, residential, dining and parking experiences (text from project's website).

Haus Rudin
Address Off Rue du Waldeck Leymen France

With a simple volume and a gabled roof, Herzog & de Meuron have overdrawn the situation to a certain extent. The type corresponds to what is generally understood to be a 'house', yet the building is nevertheless different. The exterior form could be described as the prototype of a house, as the architects themselves claim, yet it also plays with a children's drawing. On the other hand, it evokes the impression of a view of a monolithic block, albeit a raised one, floating above the ground. The cantilevered floors, which project from the outside of the building, appear like a presentation tableau, raising the house while distancing it from its context. The building also produces the impression of being a compact volume because roof overhangs are missing. In stark contrast to the grey exterior, there are soft colours inside and the lapidary spatial concept is countered by the unusual access from below and the high space above the stairs.

VitraHaus
Address Charles-Eames-Strasse 2 79576 Weil am Rhein Germany http://www.vitra.com/vitrahaus

A new building has been added to the Vitra Campus. The VitraHaus lies in close proximity to the Swiss border and the furniture manufacture's Basel headquarters. Here the Vitra Home Collection is shown. The furnishings and objects are arranged in a variety of settings for both living and working: classics by Charles & Ray Eames, George Nelson, Isamu Noguchi, Jean Prouv and Verner Panton are combined with contemporary designs by Maarten Van Severen, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Antonio Citterio, Hella Jongerius, Jasper Morrison and others. With the VitraHaus, there is a sense of "homecoming" not only with regard to the architects, but also in the building concept. Herzog & de Meuron make reference to the archetypal form of the gabled house, which is found in residential structures around the globe. They have stretched this basic form and combined a series of "houses" in an intersecting stack.
