I would like to provide a weekly update on the expansion and tournament site selection front. We are starting to see travel and vacation schedules take people out of the office, but communication remains ongoing. Charleston. President Benson was in Europe all last week, but I did speak to his senior policy advisor (Dr. Brian McGee) who indicated that he was reviewing a draft of our final due diligence questions that he would send to me for a response. I mentioned that several Presidents were interested in traveling to Charleston to meet with the President personally to answer any questions and to move the process to conclusion. Dr. McGee indicated that he would check the Presidents schedule when he returned. McGee did indicate that July was pretty heavily scheduled and that President Benson was targeting the Aug. 23 Board meeting for a decision. All indications (from any number of ancillary contacts) are supportive of the move to the CAA, but it appears that the final decision is several weeks away. Davidson. No new contact last week. As we agreed on the call last Monday, our plan is to close out Charleston which hopefully will create a new dynamic in Davidsons decision process. App State. No new contact last week. Discussions at the commissioners meetings last week further confirms that App State is NOT on the potential expansion list of CUSA. CUSA is not talking about any further expansion at the current time, but the instability of the Big East bears watching. As reported by Chancellor Miller, the dream may take some time to evaporate, so a decision is not immenent. Football expansion. At the football meetings in Hilton Head, initial approval was given to contact Albany and Stony Brook to gauge their possible interest in CAA Football membership (only FB). Our initial contacts were enthusiastically received by both institutions and I am scheduled to visit Albany on Monday (July 2) to meet with its President and tour the facilities. Stony Brook is also looking at a visit date. The plan is that if these schools are interested in joining, URI may reconsider its withdrawal and a 5 team northern division can be created bringing membership to 11. While this was happening, I was informed by the Patriot League commissioner that she is pursuing several CAA schools for football membership (W&M, Richmond, Villanova & UNH). I have spoken directly with W&M and Villanova and indirectly with UR who all expressed that they are not interested. UNH however, appears very interested in considering the Patriot League. I have a conference call with the UNH President tomorrow (Wed) afternoon. Obviously, the whole northern expansion plan hangs with UNH. Tournament Site. The committee has been very active and is revisiting Atlantic City, Baltimore and the Penn Palestra this week to continue to explore future tournament sites and operational details/complications. Upon returning from Chicago last week, I had a meeting on Saturday morning with the Richmond city fathers about moving the tournament as early as 2013. As our host/partner for 23 years, they requested that the committee also meet with the Mayor prior to making any decision. We are working on finding a convenient date(s) for the meeting. Our committee is very active and will have a recommendation within the 45 day window established in Washington. It is amazing (and maddening) how the whole membership dynamic seems to change almost daily. I greatly appreciate everyones help and participation. As an aside, I would encourage you not to be too swayed by the latest internet or hallway rumor and to contact the individuals (or me) directly with your questions. We are spending more time calming people down and stomping out erroneous reports than responding to real situations. Tom
