Description of the match: The first leg of 2013-14 UEFA Champions League Third qualifying round, played between Olympique Lyonnais (FRA) and Grasshopper Cub Zurich (SUI) at Stade de Gerland, Lyon, France. A Turkish crew handled this match, in front of an attendance of 27,331. Hseyin Gek of Turkey was on the middle with Mustafa Emre Eyisoy and Orkun Akta as assistants. Sleyman Abay worked as fourth official. The crowd appeared impressive but at the end no big problems of pressure for the referee. In its progress, the game was not really challenging fort he referee, which had to solve a penalty appeal in second half.

REFEREE 1
Application and interpretation of the Laws of the Game / match control, tactical approach and management of the game with the special situation(s) of the minute(s): Comments: Overall, it was a not intensive match to handle. It was played fairly most of the time by both teams, and this helped the referee to have a lenient approach, which anyway assured an acceptable control of the whole game. Hseyin Gek was probably aware of his choice, there werent relevant problems and he was accepted by players. The tactical approach was therefore quite lenient. He allowed physical play when it was possible, whistling the needed and being moderate with cards. In second half, he correctly evaluated a penalty appeal by away team. Some situations should be reviewed but at the end we can evaluate as satisfying his foul detection. The additional time given in both halves was consistent. Minute 70 Description of the situation Penalty appeal by Grasshopper: handball by Miguel Lopes (OL) in area. Both arms are in a consistent position, close to chest, volume of the body is not increased, so the decision to let the game flow is correct.

Disciplinary control, management of players and team officials (bench) with the special situation(s) of the minute(s): Comments: The disciplinary control performed by referee was targeted to punish players by cards only in mandatory cases, as said. It happened three times, in the whole match. The most remarkable situation is surely the one happened in the 58 minute when Grasshopper #4 was booked for a very reckless challenge on the opponent. The other two cases were quite similar: late tackles. For the rest, he might have issued cards in other situations, but he decided to be lenient. Minute 40 58 90+3 Description of the situation The first YC of the match for a reckless challenge. Mandatory YC, the foul was blatant. Correct YC but it came too late.

Minute

Description of the situation

The referee showed overall a satisfying physical condition, nevertheless he can work to improve positioning. Full time Especially in first half, he often gave the feeling to be too close to play, taking the risk to interfere. Anyway, it didnt happen. Expected level under this aspect with small areas for improvement. Co-operation with assistant referees, additional assistant referees (where applicable) and fourth official: The cooperation of the referee team was very good. Gek relied all match long on his assistants and they helped him, reporting situations happened in their area of vicinity. Anyway, the only crucial situation of the match was correctly evaluated by the referee himself. No problems under this aspect.

Personality: Personality can and must be improved. Gek must appear firm and sure in his decisions, especially when he has to show cards. This was clearly noticeable when the third YC of the match was given, in the last minutes. The card came after too much time. Furthermore, in other moments, he seemed to hesitate, with late whistles. Concerning the relationship with players, it was a good performance. They recognized his authority on the pitch, accepting his decisions. Some verbal warnings were given, too.

General comments, advice on performance and personality: The mark given is an expected level (8.3) because at the end the performance was overall acceptable in a not difficult match. The crucial decision in the penalty situation was correctly taken, but he should improve on his personality, as said. Furthermore, he could find many problems in a more intensive and challenging match, having this lenient approach.

Points discussed in the report:

Positive points:

1) 2) 3)

Control of the game. Evaluation of crucial situations in penalty area. Cooperation, especially with assistants.

Points for improvement:

1) 2) 3)

Foul detection can be a bit improved, missed minor situations. He should work more in order to appear firm and sure in his decisions. Trying to be less lenient. It is possible to give advantage, and then book the players, if you want to make the game prosper.
