Hume-Academic Magnet High School Model United Nations November 15-17, 2013 Embassy Suites Hotel Murfreesboro Dear

Parents and Students: We are pleased that you are interested in attending the 2013 Model United Nations Conference with the Hume-Fogg delegation. This conference is a valuable experience for students seeking opportunities to participate in the global conversation by engaging in debate with their peers on issues important to the world community. Choosing to join our group brings with it some responsibility. Here is what is required: Students must complete a country request form, a financial responsibility form and sign the code of conduct before registering online. The YMCA will start assigning countries on August 29. Getting your paperwork in quickly will mean you are eligible for assignments on the first day. Students must research their assigned country and submit that research to the advisor by the deadline. Students will write 4 position papers that demonstrate their understanding of the stance their country takes on these topics: Disarmament and International Security, Economics, Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Issues, and Special Political and Decolonization subjects. We will guide students in finding this information, but they must write the papers. Teams usually divide this work, but it must all be submitted online at the same time. Students will write a proposal in the character of their country. Students will write and practice an opening and closing speech to present at the conference. At MUN, students assume the role of the member nations of the United Nations and develop, present, and debate issues of international concern from the perspective of the country they represent. Students work in groups of three to produce the above material. You can visit the Tennessee Center for Civic Engagement website at http://www.tennesseeyig.org/ for more information about the YMCA program and this conference. The cost of attending MUN is $300.00 which includes registration for the conference, hotel lodging, breakfast each day, and advisor costs. There is financial aid available! Do not let the cost keep you from attending. This fee must be paid by these dates: $100.00 deposit due by August 30. $100.00 payment due on or before September 27. $100.00 final payment due by November 1. It is also acceptable to pay the entire fee at once. Please make all checks payable to HumeFogg Academic Magnet. Money cannot be refunded. Once we commit to the YMCA and to the hotel, we are responsible for the countries we are assigned and the hotel rooms we reserve. Financial aid is readily available. See Mrs. Smith or Mrs. Smithfield for confidential applications for aid. The priority deadline for requesting a country is August 30. Submitting your registration by this date means you have a better chance of getting your first choice country. In order to register, you MUST return the financial responsibility form signed by your parents. Mrs. Smithfield has prepared a libguide will all the info: http://humefogghs.libguides.com/modelun Mrs. Smithfield will be attending and supervising the conference with the assistance of Mr. Jason Booker. I will also attend as I transfer leadership of the MUN program to Mrs. Smithfield. Please contact me with any questions or concerns. I have over 20 years experience sponsoring MUN, and my own children participated when they were in high school. Our HFA students have

blossomed into articulate speakers and informed world citizens. I look forward to helping your children achieve these milestones as well. Sincerely, Elizabeth Smith Mary.smith2@mnps.org
