Suzanne Newton,Chair
Don Kret will be our new Parliamentarian. Hasexperience organizing unions and involvement incongressional campaigns in Michigan.2008 CanvassBob SchwartzWanted 2 questions answered about the 2008 campaign.Gave quick run-down, showed map of LD30: areas in green30% Dem registration or higher; orange more than 50% Repregistration. Orange dots = Andrea Dalessandro won; Black = Giffords won; Blue = Obama won; circles = Andrea camein 2
nd
; Pima County portion (79 precincts) of LD30, Gabbywon 45 and lost 34; Obama won 13 and lost 66. Andrea topvote-getter in 28 precincts. Georgette top vote-getter in 6 precincts. Where we won districts, we won big, where welost we lost big. Our voter registration – making progress, but still behind. In 2006, Democrats in LD30 28.9% cf 43.77%. Today, we have 29.8% Dems; 42.64%. The 2%change does make a difference. Most of the shifting has beenan increase in Independent/No Party registration. Of 80 precincts, our voter registration is more than 36% in 12 of them. Obama won 7 of these, Giffords won 11, Andrea won11, came in 2
nd
in 1. Highest registration change since 2006election increase of 1269 voters was in Pct 392 (Sahuarita)and 3879 registered voters in Pct 393 (Corona de Tucson). None of our candidates won in those districts. We need toknow who the registered Dems are, and we need to recruitPCs in those precincts. Pct 314 and 409 have alsoexperienced high growth. State-wide, average turnout was79%. Median was 87%. We won half of those precincts inareas with turnout in the bottom half (8/13) for Obama. Sowe tend to do well in areas with lower turnout, because thoseare the ones where Republicans stay home.

AndreaDalessandroWhat matters: 1.Growth 2.Registration (at least 30%) 3.Money 4. Campaigns (walking, interacting with voters)What we did right: We’re doing well with registration inareas with 30% Dem registration or higher and working precincts where we have PCs. Where we could do better: Need to raise more money, need to continue our registrationefforts,Question (Nancy Morrison): What kind of data do we haveabout Independents? Responses (Adam Kinsey): we onlyhave registration information from mail-in ballots in mainelections. (Andrea Dalessandro)We saw about 80% turnoutamong Independents. (Bob) Commented on single-shotcampaign approach. Amount of Rep/Ind crossover votesindicates that Andrea Dalessandro was not the second-choicefor this group. Suggestion (Nancy Morrison): Perhaps weshould obtain and use a different software (called SPSS) tohelp us, since Excel doesn’t give us all that we need.Suggestion (Laura Hogan): we need modeling software, hereand state-wide, called ‘Catalyst’. Bob Schwartz: 2 years agowe looked closely at how we could get more votes, morecross-registration, more crossover votes; Rita Ranch a bigarea and still growing – this is a prime area due to youngfamilies, but we are not making headway due to the families’deeply conservative philosophies.Vera Berkman offered thanks and congratulations to BobSchwartz for his efforts.Andrea provided details of her campaign’s results. Highlightwas her beating Antenori in Fort Huachuca. Generally, gotmore votes than registered Democrats. Lost by 5600 votes;5900 Democrats did not vote. Emphasized how critical PCsare to the campaign. In Green Valley there are 1900 moreRepublicans than Democrats, but only lost by 1 vote. Brokerecord for any Democratic House candidate in terms of #votes received. Thanked everyone and informed us sheintended to run in 2010. Shared names of PCs, slots for eachPct., and urged everyone to recruit more PCs to assist withnext campaign. Tracy Shenkeman: asked about CleanElections. Andrea said she would not run clean this time due

to uncertainty and past problems.County Chair GreetingJeff RogersReviewed how ‘money = speechand how this legalinterpretation may alter our Clean Elections law, particularlythe ‘trigger’ component which requires the state to match private funds being eliminated. This may cause problems for candidates running clean; some state-wide candidates arealreadyQuestion (Dick Baker): what is your legal opinion of thisinterpretation?JR – there is a concern that candidates on the fringes aremore likely to get elected; gave the changes in LD26 as agood example (Melvin now, vs. Hellon and Hershberger  before).Asked how many have been to HQ in the last 30 days? There have been many changes: tile flooring, patio in back, flooring in the big room, new volunteer coordinator, our newexecutive director Adam Kinsey (here today). The LD mapwill look different after 2010. Turnout, especially in CD7’sdistricts, was especially high due to incredible campaignorganization. Bob Schwartz: importance of ballot initiativesin getting voter turnout. Steve Gall: what about pushing thestate education cuts as an issue? Vera Berkman mentionedthe need for helping an initiative drive to tax liquor to provide funds for healthcare to children and to indigent people. David Olvera asked JR to comment on how state party is functioning.Invited everyone to June 13 celebration to honor former governor Raul Castro. $75 for everyone, $50 for PCs, RoseMofford and Terry Goddard will be present at UniversityMarriott.MinutesJen Prileson, secretaryMinutes from the last meeting in April were posted on
