Revealed in Makkah
ِا ِَـْا ِّا ِْِ 
 
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the MostMerciful.
ِْآا ىِذ ِناَءْُْاَو ص 
38:1 Saad. By the Qur'an full of reminding.
ٍقَِَو ٍةِ ِ ْاوُََآ َیِا ِَ 
38:2 Those who disbelieve are in false pride andopposition.
ٍصََﻡ َِ َتَو ْاوَدََ ٍنْَ ﻡ ِِْَ ِﻡ َْَْهَأ ْَآ 
38:3 How many a generation have We destroyedbefore them!And they cried out when there was no longer timefor escape.

We have already discussed the separate letters in thebeginning of the Tafsir of Surah
Al-Baqarah
, and thereis no need to repeat it here.

By the Qur'an full of reminding.means, by the Qur'an which includes all that is init as a reminder and a benefit to people in this lifeand the Hereafter.Ad-Dahhak said that the
Ayah
,
ِْآا يِذ 
(full of reminding) is like the
Ayah
,
ْُآُْآِذ ِِ ًـَِآ ْُْَِإ َْَﻥَأ ْََ 
Indeed, We have sent down for you (O mankind)a Book in which there is
Dhikrukum
. (21:10)i.e., your reminder.This was also the view of Qatadah and of IbnJarir.Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, Sa`id binJubayr, Isma`il bin Abi Khalid, Ibn Uyaynah, AbuHusayn, Abu Salih and As-Suddi said:
ِْآا يِذ 
(full of reminding)."Full of honor,'' i.e., of high standing.There is no contradiction between the two views,because it is a noble Book which includesreminders and leaves no excuse and bringswarnings. The reason for this oath is to be foundin the
Ayah
:
ِبَِ ََ َُﺱا َبَآ ِإ ُآ نِإ

Not one of them but denied theMessengers; therefore My torment was justified. (38:14)Qatadah said,"The reason for it is to be found in the
Ayah
:
ِ ِ اوُََآ َیِا ِَ ٍقَِَو ٍة
 
Nay, those who disbelieve are in falsepride and opposition.''This was the view favored by Ibn Jarir.Allah exalted says,
 
ٍقَِَو ٍةِ ِ اوُََآ َیِا ِَ

Nay, those who disbelieve are in false pride andopposition.means, in this Qur'an there is a reminder forthose who will be reminded and a lesson for thosewho will learn a lesson, but the disbelievers willnot benefit from it because they
ٍةِِ 
(are infalse pride) meaning, arrogance and tribalism,
ٍقَِَو 
(and opposition), means, they arestubbornly opposed to it and go against it.Then Allah scares them with news of how the nations who camebefore them were destroyed because of their opposition to theMessengers and their disbelief in the Scriptures that wererevealed from heaven.Allah says:
ٍنْَ ﻡ ِِْَ ِﻡ َْَْهَأ ْَآ ...
 
How many a generation have We destroyed before them!meaning, disbelieving nations.
...اْوَدََ ...
 
And they cried out,
