The First Semester of 2008-09 was a semester of joy and sorrow.

 BITS-Pilani suffered an irreparable loss when its dynamic Chancellor Dr.K.K.Birla breathed
his last on 30 August 2008 after living a celebrated life of 90 years.

It was unfortunate that the Institute had also lost one of its former Directors Dr. C.R. Mitra
and its Director of Goa Campus Dr. T.C. Goel during this semester.

 Dr. Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of
Aditya Birla Group took over as its
Chancellor on 14 September.

 Smt. Shobhana Bhartia, Chairman of


Hindustan Times Group assumed the
office of Pro Chancellor of BITS-Pilani.

 Prof. K.E. Raman was appointed as the


Acting Director of BITS-Pilani Goa
Campus w.e.f. 11 July 2008 and Prof. R.K.
Mittal took charge as the Deputy Director
(Administration) of BITS, Pilani w.e.f. 1
September 2008.

 SPICMACAY- BITS-Pilani chapter kicked off


its activities with the event VIRAASAT under
which five concerts and a film festival, first of its
kind at BITS.

 The National award winning film Ankur by


Shyam Benegal was screened on 29 August.

 The first concert of the semester was a


qawwali performance, by the well known Ustad
Meraj Ahmed Nizami and Party.

 A Kathak performance by the celebrated


Indian dancer Malabika Mitra was the next

organized by the Languages Group of BITS-
Pilani.

Silver Jubilee Celebration for Alumni of 1978 batch

 To commemorate their silver jubilee reunion,


120 alumni from 1978 batch of BITS, Pilani
visited the campus with their families.

International Convention on Water Resources
Development and Management

 The four-day International Convention on


Water Resources Development and
Management organized by the Civil
Engineering Group was inaugurated by Prof.
L.K. Maheshwari.

 Delivering the keynote address Prof. Eilon


Adar, Director, Zuckerberg Institute for Water
Research, The J. Blaustein Institutes for
Desert Research, Ben Guurion University of
Negev, Israel, spoke on climate change.

 The convention attracted eminent


academicians, scientists, planners and field
engineers from India, Israel, Australia,

The 38th annual cultural festival of BITS Pilani , OASIS 2008 was
organized with the theme – Uniomystica, meaning a highest point in the
form of ecstasy.

Mr. Sanjeev Sahi (Director Personnel of Hindustan Aeronautics


Limited , Bangalore) graced the occasion as the chief guest.

The events as ever ranging from Dance, Music, Drama, Quizzes all
were exceptionally well organized and a few new events such as Street
Dance was a mega hit.

OASIS 2008

 The Kavi Sammelan attracted this time,


one of the biggest kavis in India, Surendra
Sharma. The auditorium was packed to
capacity and the crowd laughed throughout
the two hours hilariously.

 The professional shows, OASIS had


performing for the first time KK, Lounge
Piranha and Euphoria to rock the first 2 nights
of the festival.

 Sponsorship worth Rs 14.6 lakhs increased


the prize money in events. Media Coverage
was at its best with NDTV and MTV covering
the festival brilliantly .

National Seminar on ‘Dynamics of Transformative
Cooperation in business and Society : A millennium Change.’

 Shri M. Ramadoss, CMD of Oriental Insurance,


New Delhi, gave the keynote address.

 “Corporate Social Responsibility: Past, Present


and Future”, a book by Dr. S.K. Panda, IAS and
Principal Secretary of Higher Education, Tripura
was released.

 Besides Ms. Nicola Swan, Visiting Professor,


Henley Management College, U.K., Ramon
Magsaysay Awardees Dr. Sandeep Pandey and
Shri. Rajendra Singh (Water Man) and delegates
from NABARD, UNDP, NUEPA, etc. all
participated.

Workshop on Documentary & Short film Making

 The workshop was conducted by mass media


experts – Mr. Rehman, Mr. V.K. Mishra and Mrs.
Shweta Singh who were formerly associated with
television channels.

 Mr. J.K. Mehta, formerly Deputy Director of


Doordarshan and AIR and presently an assistant
professor of mass communication at Ansal
Institute of Technology graced the occasion by his
presence.

 Film Colors of Paradise and short films such as


Khamoshi, Man Ki Chidia, etc. were screened at
the workshop to discuss the nuances of film
making.

WORKSHOP ON LEADERSHIP

•Conducted from 3-7 November 2008,by ‘Management Group’.

•Thirty senior faculty members of the institute participated in this


seminar which was led by Mr. Ashok Balwani who is an alumnus
(1972) of BITS and IIM Ahmedabad.

GOLDMAN SACHS GLOBAL LEADERS

Five Second Year students, Poonam Daga, Antonio Fernandes,


Abhishek Dutta, Aastha Mehta and Vishwa Parekh from BITS Pilani are
among the 29 students from India declared as the Goldman Sachs
Global Leaders for 2008-09.

All these 5 students have received USD 3000 each from the
Goldman Sachs Foundation.

currently stands at 15 with 6 in 2007, 4 in 2008 and 5 in 2009.

Entrepreneurship Week

 Entrepreneurship Week themed “Go Green:


The World is our Business”.

 Also present to grace the occasion was


Professor Sunil Handa, alumnus of BITS-
Pilani and presently a professor at IIM
Ahmedabad who is also founder the
Eklavya Educational Foundation.

 V.K. Desai, the founder of Tiny Tech Plans


conducted the workshop on social
entrepreneurship.

 On 8th a marathon with theme "Run for a


Cause " focusing on Entrepreneurship to

 32nd Edition of Interface with “PARIVARTAN” as the theme started on


8thMarch 2009.

Many eminent speakers including former MD, Phillips India, Kris


Ramchandran, Sudipato Gautam graced the occasion.

 Panel Discussion on Effect of Changing Economic Scenarios was

 Organised from 23-27th march 2009.

 Inaugurated by MR. Mr. BK Chaturvedi Member Planning Commission, GOI,


New Delhi.

 The renowned all India festival has touched new scales by receiving the
prestigious ISO 9001:2008 certification from SWISO, an international
certification services.

 The inaugural function concluded with the display of humanoid robots


‘ACYUT 1’ and ‘ACYUT 2’.

 ROBO Games were conducted for the first time in India.

 The T-90, T-92, T-72 and DNP-2 tanks from the stables of Indian Army and
various models of missiles from DRDO also came for display.

Birlas and their CEOs meet young minds at BITS-Pilani

Shri B. K. Birla and Smt. Sarala Birla along with a group of 16 CEOs
of various industries of Aditya Birla Group visited the campus.

They witnessed some of the projects like Rain Water Harvesting and

World Health Day Celebrations

BITS Pilani celebrated the World Health Day by organizing an


evening walk on Tuesday April 7, 2009 across the Institute led by
the Vice Chancellor Dr LK Maheshwari in which faculty members
and spouses, children and students participated.

Two day workshop on NGO motivation and networking
with CAPART in BITS-Pilani ( 13-14 April 2009)

Workshop aimed at creating awareness about CAPART projects as


well as its new guidelines and establishing a network with educational
institutions, government departments and other organizations in the
Shekhawati region.

Dr. Chandrasekhar (Director CEERI), the Guest of Honour, said that


innovative thinking and active involvement with the problems.

Around 50 NGO representatives from different parts of India

 Prof. L.K. Maheshwari, Vice Chancellor, BITS, Pilani received the


Science Counsellor Award 2007 from ISHEER (Indian Society of
Health, Environment Education and Research).

 Srikumar Murthy and Rachit Chandra represented India in New York


as Goldman Sachs Global Leaders, Class of 2008.

 Vipin Jain a third year student of BITS, Pilani awarded a full


fellowship by APNG to attend the 10th Asia Pacific Networking Group
Meet in Thailand.

 Thrivikraman P Subramanian & Shri Tushar Uttarwar has been


awarded the GE Foundation Scholarship for the period 2007-2009.

Piyush Suraj Raathor , first year Mechanical Engineering student of
BITS, Pilani secured the prestigious Aditya Birla Scholarship for 2008.

Ms. Supriya Vadlamani, receives the Second Google India Women in


Engineering Award.

Sanjot Malhi, first non-American Indian has been selected for the
MBA Programme of Yale School of Management.

M. Harsha Vardhan who is at present in his third year Computer


Science has been selected to attend the International Student Festival
in Trondheim (ISFiT),2009 in Norway.

 A number of events have been organized like the volleyball league,

Students also participated in national level competitions like BOSM-08 and


SPREE-09.
