CONT E NT S
Congregation Shaarey Zedek is a warm, welcoming, inclusive and egalitarian Conservative Jewish community.
We provide to all generations innovative, stimulating and diverse spiritual, educational leadership and social opportunities
that nurture our love and commitment to Jewish life, our Synagogue, our country and the State of Israel.
Our spiritual direction is led by committed, knowledgeable and caring clergy available to all.
Together, we participate in celebrating our history, enriching our community and planning our future.
F
rom courtrooms to dining rooms,
one of the most asked questions in
society today is who is responsible?
Day after day we read more and more about feeble excuses and
shameless scapegoating, all in an attempt to blame someone
else.
why do we so easily look outside ourselves to accuse others?
i will never forget the lawsuit led a few years back by teenagers
against a fast food restaurant. e teens were alleging that their
food was less healthy than they thought, leading them to obe-
sity, hypertension and diabetes. while i realize that at times we
face experiences and events beyond our control, i shudder at
the thought that we have internalized a certain acceptability in
blaming other people for what happens to us.
as the new year 5774 is upon us, it serves as a gentle
reminder that we must look honestly at ourselves and our
relationships, bidding us to stand up and say I messed up,
its my mistake, and I am the one who is responsible for
what happened here. mistakes are natural, but we have to take
responsibility for them. it is not always easy to accept such
responsibility. Despite the anger and embarrassment that might
come along with such honesty, there is much humility in sincerely
admitting when we are wrong.
ankfully, we have the high holyday season (which actually
begins in the middle of the summer during the seven weeks
following tisha Bav) to help us get back on the right track.
our tradition brilliantly teaches that each of us has the potential
to change, no matter howfar we have strayed. waiting for others
to change rst (and take responsibility for their actions) is a
nice thought, but ultimately, it wont help us make the positive
changes within ourselves.
Teshuvah (repentance) is about looking deeply into ourselves.
it is about carefully and self-consciously evaluating our deeds
and actions. it is about standing up and taking responsibility
for ourselves. it is possible only when we work to authentically
change ourselves in the deepest recesses of our being. we must
penetrate our souls for this process of teshuvah to work. our
ngers must point inward and not outward, for we are responsible
only for ourselves!
yes, this is the time of year that we are given a fresh start.
e high holydays are set aside for each of us to give ourselves
that all-important spiritual self-examination. So let us use this
precious time to mold ourselves into the best people we can
be, and may this be the best year of our lives!
Susan, atara, micah and elan join me in wishing you and
your family a restful and transformative summer, with greetings
for a Shanah Tovah uMetukah, a happy and healthy new year
5774!
Entering the New Year 5774:
Taking Responsibility for Ourselves
Rabbi Joseph H. Krakoff rabbikrakoff@shaareyzedek.org Twitter: @rabbikrakoff
E
cclesiastes promises us, to everything
there is a season. it has now been a
full generation that we have used our
current high holyday prayer book (mahzor),
ironically called e New Mahzor. as such,
the season is upon us for a new prayer book to give voice to the
21
st
Century jew. while any change brings some trepidation, this
one is denitely also cause for celebration. interestingly enough,
however, the expression new mahzor begs the question: arent
the words new and mahzor a contradiction in terms? after
all, the word mahzor comes fromthe hebrewroot chet-zayin-resh:
to return. it is to the same prayers and the same themes (prayer,
repentance, charity) that we are supposed to return each year
during the high holyday season.
yet, while we recite the same prayers and focus on the same
themes, each year we bring something newto our supplications.
each year we are at a dierent place in our spiritual journey.
each year we commit mistakes (hopefully not the same mistakes)
but also take steps to deepen our connection to god, torah and
israel. each year we suer terrible tragedy, loss and perhaps ill-
ness, but each year we also welcome new family and friends to
our inner circle. while each year the high holyday themes of
prayer, repentance and charity remain the same, our souls enter
the Season of judgement in very dierent ways.
in his book, e Gift of the Jews, omas Cahill oers an apt
description of jewish life and thought. in much of the world,
but especially ancient times, life was a circle: birth,
marriage, children, and then death; crops are planted, they grow,
they are harvested, and then crops are planted again. in judaism,
though, life is a spiral. we encounter similar patterns every year,
but we seek at all times to grow and change, bringing us ever
closer to gods loving presence. For the jew, our seasons are
cyclical, but, as the poet alvin Fine writes, Birth is a beginning
and death is a destination; but life is a journey.
in this newyear 5774, may we be blessed with health and joy.
and, with lev Shalem, our new high holiday machzor, giving
us voice, may we be granted renewed vigor and determination
to live a life of righteousness and peace, wholeness and holiness.
rebecca, Caleb and ayal join me in wishing you a Shanah
tovah!

I
would like to express to the congregation
my sincere appreciation and gratitude
for your warm embrace of my election
as president of our beloved congregation
at our annual meeting in april.
e Festive prelude that my fellow o-
cer and dear friend jeri Fishman organized was spectacular
gorgeous and delicious small bites and cocktails all artfully
presented by Daniel Kohn of Quality Kosher Catering started
the evening o in the most festive manner with the entire
congregation invited to sample this array of culinary creativity.
e avor combinations were intriguing and encouraged dis-
cussion among the crowd it really was a party and lots of fun!
By co-sponsoring the event, QKC made it possible for the
congregation to enjoy a gourmet array for just a nominal
charge. our party was fabulous and inclusive something for
which we should all be particularly proud. ank you jeri
Fishman, Daniel Kohn and all who worked with each of them,
including our own valued synagogue sta, in making the party
special!
e fun continued with esteemed past president and minyan
regular, Dr. richard Brown, as emcee of the nights festivities,
introducing my most adored husband jay (of 48 years 24 for
him and 24 for me) surprising me with an entertaining and
touching enumeration of 13-candles for the important inuences
in my Shaarey Zedek life. Certainly, among those inuences
were the impressive musical comedy writing and performing
team consisting of lori and past president Steven weisberg,
and Steve Fishman! ey wrote original material based upon
Broadway tunes, and entitled the show Mary Knoll Poppins.
ey also benetted from vocal and instrumental accompani-
ment from Cantor meir Finkelstein and a not-ready-for-prime-
time chorus of synagogue past presidents, spouses, and board
members. many thanks to lori, Steve, and Steve and each of
you who serenaded us that evening in fun and jest!
ere are so very many people to whom i owe thanks and
credit with hard work and eort to make a delightful evening
for us all. i apologize for being unable to list all of your names
here, including the names of our wonderful synagogue sta
who works every day to make everything the best it can be.
our sta is exceptionally dedicated and committed and i thank
each and every one of them!
as i expressed my gratitude to the congregation on the
night of the annual meeting, there were many emotional mo-
ments. ose moments all involved one common thread: my
heartfelt thanks for the enriching and inspiring friendships that
my involvement with our congregation has aorded me. i
highlighted three people who were present that night and of
particular signicance to my personal growth as a Shaarey
Zedek volunteer: janet pont, for being the embodiment of the
joy and welcoming embrace of Shaarey Zedek; marjorie
Saulson, for being the pioneer for egalitarianism and
inclusiveness at Shaarey Zedek; and, Cindy Sharan, whom i
met for the rst time fteen years ago in the Shaarey Zedek
adult Bat mitzvah Class, and who modeled and continues to
model for me the highest level of volunteer commitment while
being a bon vivant, at the ready to celebrate and enjoy all that
is good in life!
Cindy, together with past presidents of Sisterhood Karen
Katz and jeri Fishman, miriam goldberg and Suzi terebelo
are among a particularly treasured group of Sisters of mine
along with former trustee harry Siegel! of course, past pres-
idents in whose ocer groups i had served, gregg orley, David
wallace, Brian hermelin, and Steve margolin have all been
inspiring friends along with my fellow ocers larry nemer,
rob goodman, my dear friends janice Stoneman and jeri
Fishman, and our most recently elected ocer, rick Cohen.
ricks wife, Sisterhood past president linda Cohen, also is a
constant inspiration and role model for me. ank you linda!
our most valuable asset is our people. each and every
member of our congregation is important and we lay leaders,
our clergy, and sta are here to help provide a meaningful
spiritual, intellectual, and social environment for you. i urge
you all to become more connected and involved in our
community. you will nd, as i did, that you will be warmly
embraced and that your contributions will be valued.
my love and respect for our community and pride in our
heritage includes our outstanding legacy of rabbinic and
cantorial excellence. rabbi joseph Krako, rabbi aaron Starr,
and assistant Cantor leonard gutman continue that tradition
and inspire us to be better in all ways. with a steadfast
commitment to excellence, the Board of trustees has engaged
world renowned hazzan David propis for the high holy Days.
as those of you who were present on the Shabbaton of june 14
and 15 are aware, hazzan propis has a unique ability to evoke
the emotion of prayer through his magnicent voice and
personal kavanah. he and rabbi Krako have been planning
services that will be most memorable for us all.
is year, as we prepare to use the rabbinical assemblys
mahzor lev Shalem, please consider participating in one or all
of the numerous study sessions with our clergy. ey have
carefully prepared meaningful learning opportunities. e
added study will allow us a chance to be more fully prepared
both spiritually and intellectually for the holiday. ese classes
also give us a chance to reconnect with our synagogue
community, gathering back with old friends and making new
connections.
it is the connections among and between our members that
makes our community strong. as a jew-by-choice, who joined
at the time of my wedding knowing only my husband, i can

A Message from the Incoming President, Continued
assure you that whatever your knowledge level or familiarity
with the community, it is more than mine was when i rst
ventured in to the shul for a class. you will be greeted warmly
and be a valued participant. you will nd, as i did, that our
community is a most inclusive one.
at Shaarey Zedek, our leadership is committed to serving
you our valued members in creating an enriching environ-
ment for your spritual, intellectual, and social life. Come to a
service, a program, class or social action project. our synagogue
is a family and each one of us whether a rst-time participant
or a fth generation legacy member is an important person
who makes a dierence!
i look forward to being able to wish you all a Shanah tovah
in person this rosh hashanah!
Bshalom,
mary
I
t seems like yesterday, that i was on the
Bimah as an ocer for the rst time and
said, please bear with me on my maiden
voyage in talking to you. So tonight, i again
say, please bear with me on my nal voyage
as an ocer talking to you. it has truly been
an honor and privilege to have been president of CSZand i want
to thank you for giving me this opportunity.
i know i speak for everyone, when i say how much we miss
rabbi groner and how much he impacted our lives. when i
became president, rabbi groner said to me that there will be
three words you cant wait to hear. he said do you know what
they are? i said no, please tell me. he replied immediate past
president. while there were a few days where i couldnt wait
for my term to expire, the vast majority of the time i greatly
enjoyed being president and there are so many things i will
miss and so many people i need to thank.
i will greatly miss being on the bimah with our clergy on
Shabbat and the chagim, and celebrating with Bnai mitvah and
other congregants as they celebrate smachot.
i will miss the view from the Bimah, especially on rosh
hashanah and yom Kippur when the seats are all full. it is hard
to describe the emotion of seeing 3,000 of us praying together
as one family. one of our goals has to be to engage our mem-
bers to participate in the myriad of activities that we provide.
last year we did a wonderful job as we celebrated our 150th
anniversary and i will miss the excitement of that celebration.
will we ever forget the sounds of the 150th anniversary con-
cert, written by Cantor meir Finkelstein and sponsored by
henrietta and alvin weisberg, with leonard Slatkin conduct-
ing the DSo? a special thank you to lori weisberg and Beth
margolin, the co-chairs of that event. will we ever forget the
150th anniversary party with more than 900 congregants at-
tending, which we called e Ultimate party and it was? a spe-
cial thank you to Suzi terebelo, the chair of that event, and to
marjorie Saulson who was the chair of the magnicent Family
album. also thank you to judy Cantor, our archivist, for all of
her guidance during our 150th celebration.
we again had programs for every age group and demographic.
From music, to food, to childrens activities, to learning, to
Gmilut Chasidim. i want to thank the morris and Beverly Baker
Foundation in memory of morris D. Baker, for sponsoring
Danny gordis, our scholar in residence, and i look forward to
next Fall when the foundation will be sponsoring Bret Stephens
as our scholar in residence. Bret is a columnist for the wall Street
journal, was the editor of the jerusalem post and is a fabulous
speaker. i want to thank the Katzman family for sponsoring our
successful purim extravaganza, and rita Keywell for sponsoring
our new member dinner.
rabbi Krako and Cantor Finkelstein collaborated on a yizkor
CD, and i want to thank Stephan and Barbara morse and joan
provizer for sponsoring this endeavor. Cantor Finkelstein will soon
be releasing a new musaf CD and i want to thank the weisberg
family for their sponsorship. i also want to thank rabbi Krakofor
writing and distributing his book on jewish mourning practices.
and, thank rabbi Starr for being a part of Federations teenmission
to israel, and impacting our teens and religious School students. i
also want to thank assistant Cantor gutman for his work in teach-
ing congregants toleada Shiva minyan, andfor helping our students
and congregants readtorah and haftorah.
it is imperative that we utilize and incorporate the latest
technological advances. i want to thank past president Dick
Brown, who donated our new live streaming system so that
congregants who are unable to physically attend services can
watch the service on their computers. we are also in the process
of making signicant upgrades to our website. Speaking of
technology, i am reminded of the story of the mother who is
teaching her six-year-old daughter to buckle her car seat belt. Do
i click the red square mommy? yes darling, said her mother.
e daughter then asked, Single click or double click?
i will miss giving the announcements on the Bimah every
Shabbat and i want to thank you for putting up with my attempts

18 A Message from the Outgoing President, Continued
at humor and sometimes laughing at my jokes. however, what is
not a joke is the important role that CSZ plays in our lives. it is
where we experience our deepest emotions. where we laugh and
where we cry. it is where we celebrate our smachot, and where we
mourn and console each other. CSZ is where we have dedicated
and gifted clergy who reach out and touch our members. i will
miss interacting with our clergy. i will miss their guidance and
advice, and i want to thank rabbi Krako, rabbi Starr, Cantor
Finkelstein, and assistant Cantor gutman for brightening and
enhancing the lives of our congregants. i also want to thank alexis
Zimberg, our jewish Family educator, for her work.
i will also miss interacting with our sta under the direction
of Shira Shapiro. i want to thank janet pont, Shelley golsky,
tobye Bello, ron miller, Keith armbruster, gail goodstein,
Kelly woerner, martha goldberg and the rest of the sta for their
dedication to CSZ and for making my life easier.
i will miss interacting with my fellow congregants. i am
thankful for the friendships that i have made and for the help
that so many have provided. i want to thank all of the volunteers
and premium dues members for giving of their time and
resources. i want to thank everyone who has made a donation to
our shul, and i wish i could mention everyone by name. i do
however want to acknowledge e Davidson Foundation for their
continuedandsignicant support, andhonorary past president Bill
Berman for his nancial contributions. Bill not only reminds us
of our glorious past, but guides us on our vision for the future and
reminds us of the importance of touching congregants lives.
i will miss working with linda Cohen and Sisterhood, and
greatly appreciate all that they dofor the Shul. as usual, last years lois
linden nelson womans world, where ann Baruch was honored,
was outstanding. and, i knowthat next weeks event honoring Dina
Brodsky, will also be a huge success. i also want to thank alex orn-
stein and the mens Club for all of their contributions to CSZ.
to my fellowocers, mary, larry, jeri, rob, and janice, thank
you for the gift of your time and your talents in working on be-
half of CSZ. i will miss working with you and will especially miss
our weekly ursday morning meetings. i also want to thank your
spouses, jay, roz, Steve, jody and marty for sharing you with CSZ.
jeri, i want to thank you for all of your work in heading the torah
cover project. e covers are so magnicent and beautiful. i also
want to thank you for all your work on e Recorder. janice, i want
to thank you for all of your work in rejuvenating the
Sunshine committee which helps us touch members in both times
of joy and sorrow. also, thank you for instituting the Shabbat pro-
gram, Me and My Toddler, which will certainly help in our eorts
to recruit new members. rob, thank you for your work on en-
hancing our relationship with Quality Kosher Catering. also,
thank you for all of your help in dealing with so many delicate is-
sues and for your business acumen. larry, i rst want to thank
you for the inordinate amount of work that you spend on behalf
of CSZ. no one has spent as much time working on Shul matters
as you. i want to thank you for researching and dissecting every
issue so that we were in a position to make well-informed deci-
sions. ere is no one who knows more about the inner workings
of CSZthan larry. i will miss your charts and spread sheets. mary,
i also want to thank you for the enormous amount work that you
do on behalf of CSZ. From constantly working with the sta, to
working with the aliates, to producing copious minutes of our
board meetings, there are few aspects of the shul that you are not
involved with. i will also miss working with our board and past
presidents and i thank themfor their dedication to the Shul. i also
want to welcome rick Cohen to the ocer group, he is a xture
of our daily minyan and who also shares a great love for CSZ.
with our clergy, sta, and Board under the leadership of mary
Knoll, i am extremely excited about the future of CSZ.
i am blessed that my parents are here tonight. i learned the
importance of community and community service from my
parents and grandparents, and i am so thankful for all that they
have given me. i want to thank Beth and our three daughters,
amy, judy and rachel for putting up with me during my
presidency, and tell themhowmuch i love them. Finally, to Beth
the love of my life, thank you for being my partner in this
voyage. i could never have done this without your support,
advice and encouragement.
it was snack time at hebrewschool andlittle Stevie noticedthat
at the end of the table was a large pile of apples with a signthat said,
take only one apple each, god is watching. at the other end of the
table little Stevie noticed a large pile of chocolate chip cookies with
no sign. little Stevie then whispered to his friend larry, we can
take all the cookies we want. god is watching the apples.
may god continue to watch over us and this fabulous Shul.
