This November, we celebrate the 7th anniversary o\ue001 Art at Work month. Now a \ue001all tradition, the diversity o\ue001 o\ue001\ue001erings is stun- ning and truly illustrates the richness o\ue001 our community. There is something \ue001or everyone to enjoy: music and dance per\ue001or- mances, visual art exhibits, literary readings, lectures, workshops, even movement classes \ue001or children. Take this opportunity to experience something new in addition to attending an old \ue001avorite. Many o\ue001 the activities are \ue001ree and most are \ue001amily \ue001riendly.
Events and activities are listed by date and category. There is a special section \ue001or ongoing visual art exhibits at museums, gal- leries, and alternative spaces. Some artists and arts organizations are o\ue001\ue001ering special classes this month, but we also provide in\ue001ormation \ue001or the many organizations who o\ue001\ue001er classes and workshops throughout the year \ue001or all ages and in all disciplines. We make every e\ue001\ue001ort to ensure that in\ue001ormation printed in this brochure is accurate; i\ue001 you have any questions about program- ming or to con\ue000rm in\ue001ormation, please contact the presenting organization.
Throughout this brochure, you will \ue000nd seven broadsides which are collaborations between six local poets and seven local letterpress artists. When you are riding the bus this November, be sure to look up; you may just spot one o\ue001 these broadsides inside the bus you are riding. You can pick up \ue001ull-sized copies o\ue001 the posters at various locations around Tacoma, including the museums.
First, you are invited to attend the Art at Work Opening Party on October 29 at the Tacoma Art Museum. Join us \ue001or an evening \ue000lled with music by Pearl Django, poetry readings by our broadside poets, and a hands-on art activity. We will honor the winners o\ue001 the 2008 AMOCAT Awards \ue001or community outreach in the arts, recognize those artists and organizations who received \ue001und- ing \ue001rom the Arts Commission in 2008, and just have \ue001un.
You will notice the pull-out Studio Tour guide that lists all the artists who are opening their studios to the public on November 8 & 9. Each artist will be giving away a limited number o\ue001 collectible cards that \ue001eature their artwork. These cards are designed to be assembled into a House o\ue001 Cards. Visit every studio and collect the whole set!
We would like to extend our thanks to Paci\ue000c Lutheran University\u2019s graphic design program. Through a unique partner-
ship that provides students with real li\ue001e design experience, we have bene\ue000ted \ue001rom the talents o\ue001 student Brittany Staten and
graphic design pro\ue001essor Jp Avila who designed all the Art at Work materials. We are grate\ue001ul that they have lent their \ue001antastic
talents to this project.
You will \ue000nd that the arts are both \ue001un and essential to Tacoma, enlivening all corners o\ue001 our community. Be an active par- ticipant in what is happening in Tacoma year-round. Programs and services like the ones highlighted in November exist \ue001or everyone to enjoy \u2013 you don\u2019t need to be an artist to be a part o\ue001 the arts!

Evocative sound artist James Richard Cobb III returns to
Karpeles Museum with new work based on spectral sound
design, lowercase drumming and narrative phonetics.
Through this unique brew o\ue001 sonic re\ue000ection he attempts
to create an environment o\ue001 open listening.

A sidesplitting comedy o\ue001 mistaken identity and
harebrained schemes. Leo and Jack are two Shakespear-
ean actors who are so down on their luck that they\u2019re
playing \u201cScenes \ue001rom Shakespeare\u201d on the Moose Lodge
Circuit in Pennsylvania\u2019s Amish country. When they read
about a rich old woman in York, PA, who is about to die
and leave her \ue001ortune to her two, long-lost nephews, whom
no one has seen since birth, they decide to high-tail it to
York to impersonate the two men. It\u2019s only when they\u2019re a
\ue001ew minutes out o\ue001 town that they realize that the nephews
are in \ue001act nieces, and that they must appear in York as
Maxine and Stephanie i\ue001 they\u2019re to collect the loot.
It is a dark and stormy night\u2026and Chester (the
Monroe \ue001amily cat) and Harold (the \ue001amily dog) sit waiting
\ue001or their owners to return home \ue001rom the movies. When the
Monroes fnally do arrive home, they come bearing a
surprise: they\u2019ve \ue001ound a bunny in the movie theater. But
when the \ue001amily\u2019s produce starts losing it\u2019s juice, Chester
thinks he knows what\u2019s causing the \ue001antastic phenom-
enon\u2026this bunny is a vampire!
Puget Sound Theatre Arts presents Pierre Beaumarchais\u2019
The Marriage o\ue001 Figaro in a new adaptation by William J.
Royce. This screwball comedy \ue001ollows the wedding day o\ue001
Suzanne and Figaro as they con\ue001ront dozens o\ue001 schemes
and accidents that threaten to keep them apart. Expect
physical comedy, inadequate hiding places, misbehaving
props, witty dialogue and, \ue001rankly, some cheap laughs.
Day 1 o\ue001 a 3-day workshop. Today you will learn how
to select images, learn some shooting techniques, see
examples o\ue001 trans\ue001ers, sample items you can trans\ue001er onto,

Swedish artist Bertil Vallien has been a leader in the glass
art world since the 1960s. Vallien was the frst artist to
apply sand casting to glass, His residency will \ue001ocus on
sand casting applications.

Dance with the dead down the Ave. Papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9
puppets, masks, drums, and music will accompany this
celebration o\ue001 li\ue001e in \ue001ull color. Let us treat you a\ue001terwards to
hot Mexican chocolate and traditional Day o\ue001 the Dead
sweet breads in a ceremonial tent by MASA.
The Tacoma Art Museum partners with Centro Latino in
welcoming the community to participate with in celebrating
D\u00eda de los Muertos; \ue001eaturing dance, music, decoration o\ue001
sugar skulls, art displays, and a procession.

This evening is intended to give current 9th graders the
in\ue001ormation they need to apply to attend SOTA beginning
their Sophomore year. There will be a short presentation
and sta\ue001\ue001 and students will answer questions.
Thematic, musical programs \ue001or toddlers, preschoolers, and their grown-ups. No registration required.
Come play with us and help kids get ready \ue001or school!
Session includes play-flled activities and in\ue001ormation \ue001or
adults. For children up to 5 years and their adults. No
registration required, this is a drop-in program.
The oldest painting style, Chinese Gongbi, will be taught by
Patsy Surh O\u2019Connell. Its style is marked by a meticulous
brush technique that delineates details very precisely and
without independent or expressive variation.
More than rendering the beauty o\ue001 the natural
world, the genre o\ue001 landscape painting depicts place: ours
and theirs. This lecture reveals how this genre was
instrumental in the construction o\ue001 national identities in the
nineteenth century.
Participants will explore the connection between
Soar into Story and dance/movement. Series o\ue001 fve
classes on Wednesdays, October 22 \u2013 November 19.
For ages 3 - 6. Pre-registration required.
A threesome o\ue001 Washington\u2019s fnest authors will gather
\ue001or an unusual storytelling session. Garth Stein (The Art
O\ue001 Racing In The Rain), Thor Hanson (The Impenetrable
Forest: My Gorilla Years In Uganda), and Jennie Shortridge
(Love and Biology At The Center O\ue001 The Universe) will read
excerpts \ue001rom the other\u2019s books and ask pertinent ques-
tions sure to pique the interest o\ue001 the audience.
Opening reception \ue001or Beauti\ue001ul Angle, Tacoma\u2019s \u201cguerilla
arts poster project\u201d, combining text and image to create
visually power\ue001ul, lyrical observations o\ue001 urban li\ue001e that are
both critical and celebratory.
All students and community members interested in drawing
\ue001rom a live model are welcome to attend. This is a non-
classroom situation (no \ue001ormal instruction will be provided),
so bring the drawing tools o\ue001 your choice and enjoy the
relaxed studio atmosphere or work on your port\ue001olio.
The inaugural Foundation o\ue001 Art Award will be presented
to local artist Chris Sharp and his artwork will be unveiled.
The luncheon will also \ue001eature live entertainment and a
presentation by keynote speaker, Lesra Martin.
