Introduction

This November, we celebrate the 7th anniversary o Art at Work month. Now a all tradition, the diversity o oerings is stun- ning and truly illustrates the richness o our community. There is something or everyone to enjoy: music and dance peror- mances, visual art exhibits, literary readings, lectures, workshops, even movement classes or children. Take this opportunity to experience something new in addition to attending an old avorite. Many o the activities are ree and most are amily riendly.

About this brochure:

Events and activities are listed by date and category. There is a special section or ongoing visual art exhibits at museums, gal- leries, and alternative spaces. Some artists and arts organizations are oering special classes this month, but we also provide inormation or the many organizations who oer classes and workshops throughout the year or all ages and in all disciplines. We make every eort to ensure that inormation printed in this brochure is accurate; i you have any questions about program- ming or to conrm inormation, please contact the presenting organization.

Throughout this brochure, you will nd seven broadsides which are collaborations between six local poets and seven local letterpress artists. When you are riding the bus this November, be sure to look up; you may just spot one o these broadsides inside the bus you are riding. You can pick up ull-sized copies o the posters at various locations around Tacoma, including the museums.

We would like to call your attention to a ew components sponsored by the Tacoma Arts Commission:

First, you are invited to attend the Art at Work Opening Party on October 29 at the Tacoma Art Museum. Join us or an evening lled with music by Pearl Django, poetry readings by our broadside poets, and a hands-on art activity. We will honor the winners o the 2008 AMOCAT Awards or community outreach in the arts, recognize those artists and organizations who received und- ing rom the Arts Commission in 2008, and just have un.

You will notice the pull-out Studio Tour guide that lists all the artists who are opening their studios to the public on November 8 & 9. Each artist will be giving away a limited number o collectible cards that eature their artwork. These cards are designed to be assembled into a House o Cards. Visit every studio and collect the whole set!

Specically or you artists out there, we are hosting a ree Arts Symposium on November 15 & 16 where presenters will cover
many topics relevant to being an artist and having an arts business.

We would like to extend our thanks to Pacic Lutheran University’s graphic design program. Through a unique partner-
ship that provides students with real lie design experience, we have beneted rom the talents o student Brittany Staten and
graphic design proessor Jp Avila who designed all the Art at Work materials. We are grateul that they have lent their antastic
talents to this project.

You will nd that the arts are both un and essential to Tacoma, enlivening all corners o our community. Be an active par- ticipant in what is happening in Tacoma year-round. Programs and services like the ones highlighted in November exist or everyone to enjoy – you don’t need to be an artist to be a part o the arts!
