Camp Hero
It is tough being a kid thesedays – particularly whendealing with the stress of belonging to a military family.Our Youth Developmentprograms help kids cope whileproviding them with positive,fun opportunities to get toknow themselves and eachother.Camp Hero is a week long day camp that serves as an outletfor military youth to share their common experiences andreceive academic enrichmentall while making friends andhaving fun! The curriculum isdesigned to help children findpractical ways to address thechallenges of military life,provide tools to help themsucceed in school, and improvesocial and communicationskills. Camp Hero Staff 
Camp Hero staff are full time Armed Services YMCA Youthand Community Outreach (YCO)staff members that want to hostan awesome summer packed with fun, adventure, andexploration!Our staff is passionate aboutsupporting military youth andtake pleasure in maintaining astructured, educationalprogram in an atmosphere of fun and excitement.The ASYMCA takes seriously the importance of childprotection and safety. We havespecific, tested policies andprocedures for all staff that work with children.The following are some of our proven safety practices:
1. The ASYMCA has comprehensivepre-employment screening for staff members and program volunteers, including interviews,reference and nation-widecriminal history checks.2. All camp counselors regularly  work with school aged youth ininformal educational settingsand are certified in pediatricFirst Aid and CPR.
Camp Hero Awards
Families are encouraged to attendthe Camp Hero Award Ceremony on the Friday afternoon of camp.This ceremony is an opportunity tocongratulate campers and recognizetheir accomplishments fromthroughout the week.
Operation Hero
Frequent relocations often require military families to leavefriends and extended family behind. Through a variety of activities, crafts, and challenging games, kids will tackle toughtopics including making new friends, family separation, takingresponsibility, and conflict resolution. Camp Hero is a chancefor kids to build friendships and share common experiences while further developing their self esteem and resilience. Theseopportunities will take place in the classroom as well as in thecommunity through two local field trips each week to San Diegoscenic parks.
Project WILD
The goal of Project WILD is to assist learners of any age indeveloping awareness, knowledge, skills and commitment toresult in informed decisions, responsible behavior andconstructive actions concerning wildlife and the environmentupon which all life depends. Project WILD activities and lessons will be presented as part of the Camp Hero curriculum toenhance campers understanding of the world around them.Campers will have opportunities to further explore the Project WILD lessons through half day trips to Cabrillo NationalMonument and Santee Lakes Park. The trips are a chance toincrease campers’ understanding and awareness of the diversity of San Diego’s ecosystems, wildlife, and history.
CAMP ACTIVITIES:
 
 YES!
 YES! (Youth Enrichment Summer) outings afford children inmilitary families, ages 7 to 12, the opportunity to explore a variety of San Diego area attractions. YES! outings take placethe Thursday of camp and will include a visit to either the SanDiego Wild Animal Park or YMCA Camp Surf. Camp Herocampers will have priority registration to the YES! outing notoffered during their week of camp.
 
Camp Clothes
Camp Hero is fun. Occasionally fun can also mean messy!Dress your campers in old clothes so they are ready to play hard and get dirty! Campers are required to wear closedtoed shoes and socks daily and should arrive to Camp withsunscreen already applied.
 What to Bring
It is recommended that you send your camper with abackpack to keep all their belongings together. Allbelongings should be labeled with your camper’s namebefore sending to camp. Camp Hero campers must bringtheir own lunch and water bottle to camp daily (except when noted in the camp schedule). Please send only non-perishable foods as refrigeration is not available. Pleasealso be sure your camper has sunscreen and a sweatshirt.
 What not to Bring
Campers may not bring electronic devices (cell phones,iPods, video games), toys, jewelry, or money to CampHero. The Armed Services YMCA is not responsible for any items that are lost or stolen.
Camp Hero Staff 
Karena Vigliotti:
Program Director Beginning her third summer at the Armed Services YMCA, Karena comesto us from Massachusetts and is agraduate of St. Lawrence University  with a degree in Psychology. Her energy,enthusiasm,and love for  working withchildren of allages has madeher time at the Armed Services YMCA atremendousthrill. Karena discovered a love for camp her first week at the ArmedServices YMCA and is excited to seeCamp Hero grow to a full week program this summer!
 Andrea Fields:
Program Leader  Andrea joined the YCO staff lastsummer for YES! and is excited tobegin her second summer at the Armed Services YMCA. A SouthernCalifornianative, summer has alwaysbeen her favorite season! Andrea is asenior at SanDiego StateUniversity, pursuing a degree in Women’s Studies and Social Work.She looks forward to directing her passion for empowering youth andtheir families into meaningful summer programs for military youth.
Lyndsay Calhoun:
Program Leader Starting her first summer at the Armed Services YMCA, Lyndsay is aSan Diego nativeand graduate of University of California, SanDiego with adegree inSociology. Her passion to reachchildren of all ages througheducation and recreation, hasbrought her to the ASYMCA from Vilseck, Germany where she worked with military youth and their families.She is eager and ready to embark onthe fun exploration of Camp Hero!
Let’s Camp!
Camp Hero Eligibility 
Camp Hero is open to children of military service members from allservice branches. The military service member must be rank E6or below and assigned to a SanDiego military installation or SanDiego based ship. Children mustbe between seven and twelveyears old by August 1st to beeligible. There will be
no
ageexceptions. Priority will be givento children who have notparticipated in either the after school Operation Hero program or 2009 Operation Outdoors.
Financial Contributions
The Armed Services YMCA isproud to provide over 40 freeprograms to San Diego military service members and their familieseach month. Should you wish tomake a contribution to the ArmedServices YMCA in support of programs such as Camp Hero youmay do so by sending your donation to the Armed Services YMCA at 3293 Santo Road, SanDiego, CA 92124 or call 858-751-5755 for more information.
Deposits
Camp Hero registration forms anda twenty dollar refundable deposit will be required to register for camp. Deposits will be availablefor return to parents the final day of camp or the last registered YES!outing, whichever is later. Shouldthe family fail to cancel their child’s camp at least two weeksprior to the first day of camp or thechild not attend camp, the deposit will be considered a donation tothe non profit Armed Services YMCA.
Emergency Procedures
Contacting CampersIf you should need to reach your child during camp please call our front desk at 858-751-5755. They  will take your message and get theinformation to your child.Camper Illness or Injury If your camper becomes ill atcamp our staff will contact you topick them up. Please havearrangements to do so in a timely manner. If you child is injuredcamp staff will take whatever stepsare necessary to obtain medicalcare. If we are unable to reachyou and your child needs medicalattention they will be transportedto the hospital by an ambulance. All expenses for emergency medical care are the responsibility of the parent.
