TED BIGVIZ 2008

TED2008 was the first TED (Technology Entertainment Design) conference that my wife and I attended. I'm not easily inspired, it was truly thought-provoking and moving. We both loved it.

BIGVIZ is a visual depiction of the TED208 conference. David Sibbet, who I know through the Coro Fellowship, and Kevin Richards were the incredible visual cartographers during TED that year.

Autodesk provided the digital tools to create this document. The two artists used Autodesk SketchBook Pro and Wacom Cintiq 21UX tablets.

TEDPrize winners are shown on slide 57-68

 VIZ
, a visualdepiction of the big ideas presented at
TED
2008. From February 27th to March1st, 2008 over 50 leaders in technology, entertainment and design shared theirideas, passion and brilliance to an audi-ence of 1600 in Monterey, California, and Aspen, Colorado. This e-book strives to capture the spiritof the mainstage presentations by repre-senting the presenters’ ideas in the formof loose sketches, concept maps andvisualizations. Our intent is to provide a rich graphicrecord of TED. For those fortunate to at-tend this year’s conference, theBIG
 VIZ
will hopefully remind you of the centralconcepts, big ideas, as well as the littleones. Our graphic representations areidiosyncratic, expressive, rather thanobjective. We’d like to thank our talented visualcartographers, David Sibbet and KevinRichards, who, through their herculean
efforts, rendered the restorm of TED
big ideas into a seemingly endlessstream of meaningful colorful images.Special thanks to John Schmier of  Autodesk who made the technologywork seamlessly and to Jeff Han andPhil Davidson from Perceptive Pixel for
rendering the sketches so magnicently
on the multi-touch display. Thanks to Scott Rawlings at Wacom Technology Corporation for providingtheir leading edge design tools. And, of course, we’d like to express our deepgratitude to Chris Anderson, Tom Rielly,William Allen, Janet and Katherine Mc-Cartney, Rebecca Berry and the entire TED team for supporting the wild ideawe generated one warm Friday after-noon in New York to make TED ideasvisible, interactive and persistent.

Though the ideas representatedin the BIG
 VIZ
sketches are self-explanatory, there is an underly-ing structure to the visual repre-sentations. The image and text renderingsare color coded. Technologi-cal ideas are generally renderedin orange; political and socialmessages in red; business andeconomic themes in blue; envi-ronmental content in green; andspirtual messages in purple. Thissystem will let you quickly identifythe context of a visualization. You can use the section labelsand page numbers at the bottomof this document to freely naviga-tion throughout the
