utherland Global Services recentlyconducted an inter-location cricket match, where six teams from its six locations in thecity competed for the coveted ‘Bravo Cup’.The game was launched last year, christened ‘Sutherland Premier League’, andis to be held every year in conjuncture withthe IPL cricket matches. The finals were held last Sunday at theYMCA Grounds, Nandanam, where theteams from Velachery and DLF battled itout in a nail-biting encounter. TheVelachery team seemed to be in troublewhen they lost three consecutive wickets. However, the match was won by them withthe very last ball going for a four, whenonly two runs were required. It was a day of excitement and fun, whichallowed the usually serious-mindedemployees of Sutherland to let there hairdown and enjoy a good game ofcompetitive cricket.Sutherland conducts such events for theiremployees on a regular basis, helping themblow of steam and also mingle with oneanother from their various operationallocations.

Party magic
In a recent case of kidnap of twoDelhi-based girls, police arresteda bunch of thugs from Ayanava-ram. The men were booked andsent to prison later. As a ‘special case’,the arrested were soongranted bailand arefree birdsnow. In-siderssay theinvolve-ment of aleading lo-cal politic-ian has donethe magic. Ap-parently, the ac-cused are known to be hishenchmen.
More changes onthe way
In a sudden move, the city’s twotopmost cops were transferredlast week. It is said to be the reper-cussion of the advocates-policeclash that took place a few months ago. Reliable sources say there would be a few more trans-fers storming into the police cir-cles as the political dramabetween Delhi and Chennai hasalmost come to a climax. A seniorpolice officer who is now in Coim-batore could be the next new en-try to the city.
Star contrabandconnections
An upcoming starlet in Kolly- wood is said to be a drug addictand also runs a drug racket among film stars. Key police sources re-veal that the woman along with afew foreign nationals is doing swift drug business in the city. However, she has been escaping the police net as a result of herhigh-level connections. But she isstill under secret surveillance.
 The real killer?
There are still many unanswer-ed questions in the recent murderof an airhostess in the city eventhough an accused has been ar-rested and put behind bars. Insid-ers reveal that the apprehended, who is a petty thief, is innocent inthe case and has been framed dueto heavy media attention on thecase. The hand of a bigwig is sus-pected in the crime, whom thekhakis are suspected to be pro-tecting, sources add.

eepa Sekar is surprised at theinstant success of her unlikelytrade. “‘Is it really paper?’ isthe first thing they ask,” shelaughs good-naturedly, placing a star-and-leaf-shaped earring into my openpalm. After much inspection, I ask her“Is it really paper?”Deepa’s business requires her to useall her ten fingers and is called ‘10 Fin-gers’ too. What does she use them for?Making paper jewellery and runningher online business via her blog. Sur-prisingly, she claims she is not a jewel-lery person.“I worked as a freelancer for a dot-com company for a while and thismade me comfortable with the Inter-net. In fact, my flickr pages where Iposted most of my jewellery piec-es caught a lot of attention. That’s when the blogbegan and the busi-ness became offi-cial,” she explains.A part of thearts and craftsscenario eversince childhood,Deepa was for-ever intrigued bythe patterns anddesigns one couldmake with paper. She started it as a hob-by, playing around, mak-ing random designs. To getcomments about her work, she photo-graphed a few and put it up online.Just as she expected, comments and re-quests for purchase started pouring inand she realised she was “sitting on agold mine”.“I decided to work on somethingwearable for women of any age. Theearrings that I make work well for anIndian audience. The first batch of 10Fingers earrings were launched in De-cember 2008 at DakshinaChitra andwere received well. Peo-ple started getting curi-ous and placed moreorders online. Thenthere was no turningback.”Paper for the ear-rings is picked upwherever she shops, while the hooks andstones attached tothem are brought infrom dealers in variousstates, according to therequired design. Though jewellery makes up mostof her business, she alsodoes card and gift toppers ona small scale. And yes, they’remade of paper too.Six months into the trade, Deepa isnow thinking of more retail outletsto distribute her products. Butshe insists she is most com-fortable online. With twooutlets – DakshinaChitraand Vanilla Place – al-ready selling herbrand, she is happydoing her custom-based design and de-livery online, saying itis “easier to workwith”.“With 10 Fingers, I seemyself heading somewh-ere. But I don’t make toomany plans. It’s better to just gowith the flow. The product works wellbecause its niche is paper. I think paperis seriously underrated. My challenge isto refine its position,” smiles Deepa, her hand carefully lifting up the ear-ring from my hand and sliding it backinto its cover.
10 Fingers earrings range from Rs. 175 to Rs.500 and are available at DakshinaChitra and Vanilla Place, Mylapore. You can also place orders directly at http:// paperjewellery.wordpress.com or contact Deepaat 9840326354.
