Building of an infrastructure PKI used in an environment of a trading online system 2/204
Project scope
The diploma thesis will be executed in a society, based in Milan, called IT Software. Thedefinition of the project purpose has for a working title:"Building of an infrastructure PKI
1
used in an environment of a trading online system"
 Environment
Currently, IT Software (www.itsoftware.it) develops and distributes trading online systemsfor its own clients, which are financial institutions. The enterprise wants to explore thepossibility to use a PKI infrastructure to guarantee a stronger reliability in its client'sauthentication (with digital certificates for the clients). To this day, the system is based on asimple authentication solution dealing with logins and passwords. The project will implement a PKI based on open source software. Particularly, the studentwill:
٠
suggest and verify one or more architectural solutions
٠
define the procedure of attribution and revocation of certificates
٠
define the integration mode with the actual infrastructure
٠
explore, in terms of costs and technique, eventual biometrical authentication systems whichcan be integrated within the defined PKI
٠
realize a demonstration based on open source products and showing the PKI solutionproposed. One of the most interesting aspects of this project resides in the good choice of the type of license open source to be used so that IT Software can deploy without constraints thesuggested PKI-solution. The system could be integrated in a web-based infrastructure (mostimportant) and also in client/server infrastructure (less important).Work will be divided in two distinguished parts:
1) Logistic and organisation aspects
-

Written definition of the proposed architecture-

Application installation and configuration on IT Software's infrastructure-

Certificate checks and tests (attribution, revocation, etc.)-

Written documentation of the executed activity-

Documentation on the choices of the realized configuration and the motivation whichhave brought about these choices

-

Setting up of the organizational aspects (automatic procedures of attribution/revocation, backup/restore procedures, etc.)
2) Software integration
Web-based integration example-

Certificate installation on commercial browsers like IE 6/7, Firefox 2 and check on thecompatibility-

Web-based demo application using certificates-

Check of the behavior in case of revocation
