Excitement is in the air! Twosummers ago, TSTI’s renovationplan kicked off with theaddition of a wonderfuloutdoor entertainment spaceoff of the Mansion and a new playground for ourpreschoolers. Last summer’sactivity brought us ourbeautiful new worship space, religious school offices andseveral new classrooms. This June, we will commence work on the third phase of ourrenovation efforts. This summer’s project has twodistinct elements. The firstwill include the completedemolition and replacement of our common areas includingthe lobby and the mainhallway that leads to our new worship space, religiousschool, and administrativewing. When completed thisfall, TSTI congregants and guests will enter our facility through a modern, beautiful, functional and secure lobby area. The renovation willbring much sunlight into thesesynagogue spaces, provide for a family gathering space, a re-designed gift shop and more functional museum spaces toshowcase artifacts from our treasured past. The second elementof this summer’s work includes the construction of an indooratrium in the open-area playground between our buildings. Inaddition to providing anadditional space for congregantsto celebrate simchas, the Atriumwill provide much-neededfunctional space for ourreligious and pre-schoolstudents.Funding for this project has beenprovided by the generouscontributions of so many Templemembers to the
Preserving Our Past for Generations to Come Capital and Endowment Campaign
that began more thanfour years ago. Aside from very substantial endowment fundsraised to support Templeprogramming activities, theCampaign received pledgesdedicated to the improvementand modernization of ourTemple facilities. With thebulk of these funds already inhand, TSTI is able to proceedwith this project even duringthese challenging economictimes. You will be able to follow theprogress of the construction atwww.tsti.org, where we willpost updated pictures and construction bulletins about the bestways to enter and exit the building. Any temporary inconvenience we experience during the construction will befar outweighed by the wonderful improvement to our synagogue.Come 5770 (this fall), we will have much to celebrate!

The President’s Point of View
Jack Fersko
It is remarkable to me that almost two years have passedsince my installation as President. I am thankful to theTemple membership for having entrusted me with theopportunity to serve our synagogue. Service to our Templeaffords us the opportunity to fuel our souls. When I wrote my first bulletin article, I urged each of you tothink towards the future, so that at the end of what is now the past two years, together we could look back and feel asthough we made a contribution – not just to the current lifeof our membership but also to the future Templemembership.I was very fortunate during the past two years. I receivedsound advice from many Past-Presidents. But like a goodparent, they suggested and did not direct. I was privilegedto have the opportunity to work with an ExecutiveCommittee during each year that gave limitlessly of themselves, adapting to a new set of by-laws and a new committee structure. The committee chairs each took on anadded role of responsibility, as the committees becameresponsible for carrying out many substantiveresponsibilities and ensuring a system of succession so thata constant source of future leaders always was available. Butthe success of the leadership of this Temple never wouldhave been possible were it not for the Temple membership’scommitment to our collective success.I would need pages to even begin listing all of those whocontributed of their time and financial support to thecollective endeavor of Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel. But Iassure you each that your efforts have not gone unnoticedover the past two years — and for all of your time anddevotion – I offer my most humble gratitude. While we as a community provide the glue that holds ourTemple structure together, our clergy and professional staff create the structure upon which we are able to build anddevelop. I have had the privilege of working with a clergy team and professional staff that has as its singular goal, thesuccess and well-being of each and every congregant. Ledby Rabbi Cohen, together with Rabbi Miller, CantorAronson, and Cantorial Soloist Joan Finn, our clergy work 24/7 ensuring that each of our individual interests isnurtured. And under the leadership of our Executive Director,Leslie Sporn, our staff ensures the seamless operation of ourfacility, even under the most difficult of economic times. Ialso take note of the dedication to our children from ourReligious School Director Pia Kutten, our Preschool DirectorCarol Paster and our Program Director Tracy Horwitz — andthe dedication to our Temple of our Senior Assistant, Sunny Seglin, who ensures, amongst many other efforts, the timely production of this bulletin. If we have achieved a level of success over the past two years, and set a foundation for our future, it is due to thecontribution of each of those mentioned above. To the extentthat we could have done better — well, as the saying goes, the buck stops here. But at the end of the day, I hope that overthe past two years we have fostered an environment in whichall points of view could be aired, decisions were challengedso that they were well reasoned, and we presented, at alltimes, a process that respected a difference of opinion. At theend of the day, it is not only what we accomplish, but how weachieve that sets the foundation for future growth andsuccess. As I move to that coveted position of Immediate Past-President, I do so with a spirit of great optimism. We have anew Executive Committee and Board of Trustees that will beled by our new President, Hope Pomerantz. Over the past two years I have witnessed first hand the dedication and love thatHope has for our synagogue. She is a bright and talentedwoman, with a high sense of ethics. I know that Temple is in good hands with Hope at the helm. Finally, I want to express my gratitude to my entire family, and in particular Helene. Without their steadfast love, Inever would have managed the past two years as I did. Forthe past 35 years Helene has provided me unwaveringsupport and guidance. For that I am eternally grateful.I wish each of you a restful summer; re-charge yourselves fora very exciting new year.
