Ashley and Tiana
is the story of two unlikely friends, Ashley Glazier and Tiana Thompson, who meet at summer camp in Pennsylvania during the summer of 1982. Tiana, who lives in the Bronx, is into Hip Hop and Ashley, who lives in Greenwich Village,is into punk rock. After an awkward meeting, they become best friends and learn thatthey, and their music, have a lot more in common than they first realized. Following aseries of adventures, their summer culminates in the most highly anticipated andexciting event of their young lives. Ashley and Tiana is an inspirational, educational, andentertaining story for girls and boys of all ages about the value of friendship, perseveringin the face of challenges, and embracing the everyday joys of life.

Chapter One
October 2, 1981Dear Admissions Committee,My name is Tiana Thompson. I am 11 years old and live in the South Bronx in NewYork City. I am writing to request admission and a full scholarship to attend Super Science Summer Camp next year.I am at the top of my class at Hostos-Lincoln Academy of Science where I am in 6
th
grade. I am interested in learning more about science over the summer because I want to be a doctor when I grow up. I plan to help people in my neighborhood who cannot afford to go to the doctor by opening a free clinic that specializes in holistic medicine.I love my neighborhood and the Bronx, but I have not had the chance to visit other  places. Attending science camp this summer would be a tremendous opportunity for me. I would also like to meet other students from across the country who are interested in science.My family is not able to afford the cost of camp. My mother works two jobs tosupport me and my brother who is 16 years old. She works very hard, and my brother helps out, but we struggle to make ends meet. This is why I am requesting a fullscholarship.Thank you for considering my application. I hope to meet you at camp thissummer.Sincerely,Tiana Thompson

October 17, 1981Dear Super Science Summer Camp:I am writing because I would like to be selected to attend Super Science Summer Camp. I am planning to be a veterinarian for reptiles, amphibians, and birds. I love allanimals, but I especially like exotic pets.Because I live in New York City, I do not often see a large variety of animals in their natural habitat. I have visited family who live near Super Science Summer Camp and Ilearned a lot about animals and nature while I was there. My mother grew up inPennsylvania and I visit every summer to spend time with my grandmother. My mother died two years ago and she would be so proud of me if she knew that I attended your camp.I am in 6
th
grade at Greenwich Village (M896) and so far I have a 4.0 grade point average. I love learning new things and I am excited to learn a lot about science,nature, and animals at Super Science Summer Camp this summer.Thank you for reading my application.
