 – Biography 2009
Originally from Portland Oregon, Gary Guthman started his career at the age of nine. For the first15 of his playing years we was taught by Jack Dalby (Low Brass - Oregon Symphony),Joyce Johnson (principal trumpet - Oregon Symphony) and principal trumpet (retired 2007) of theOregon Symphony – Fred Sautter.After attending Portland State University, Gary performed with the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra(lead by Lee Castle), Stan Kenton Orchestra, and Don Ellis Orchestra and with Louis Bellson.In 1973, Gary Guthman moved to Canada and became known as one of Canada's premier leadand commercial trumpeters, playing on over 100, televised "ITV IN Concert" performances aswell as radio shows, jingles, and movie sound tracks and in concert. From 1976-1981 Gary performed on television series starring Tom Jones, Paul Anka and Rene Simard. Also during thattime, Gary directed the jazz program at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver andformed his now renowned "Tribute Orchestra".1988 saw the inception of Gary Guthman's pops production entitled "
 A Tribute to Harry James
",was followed in 1994 by the creation of his 2nd show "
The Trumpet Greats
" and his third in2000 entitled "
 Swingmatism
".From 1998-2001, Gary was headliner and Musical Director for the North American tour of "
Forever Swing 
" which included performances at the Meridian Theater in Philadelphia,The Warner Theater in Washington DC, the National Arts Center in Ottawa Canada andthe Las Vegas Aladdin Hotel and Casino.In 2004, Gary debuted by invitation at Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops, conducted bySkitch Henderson and premiered his theatrical presentation of 
“Swingmatism” 
at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival.Since moving to Europe, Gary has given over 100 concerts and three, 15-city tours with his "GaryGuthman Quartet" and "The New Swing Orchestra" as well with Philharmonic and SymphonyOrchestras.For the last 10 years, Gary Guthman has been orchestrating, arranging and composing for symphony pops, television and radio, and is becoming recognized as one of the leadingorchestrators for theater, stage and cabaret performers. Gary’s most recent creation was his highlyacclaimed "Master&Margarita" written and orchestrated for Symphony Orchestra and performed by renowned Polish harpistMalgorzata Zalewska.Gary was pleased to open the 2009-10 symphony pops season for the Calgary PhilharmonicOrchestra (Canada).Gary Guthman plays “Rembrandt”, Marcienkewicz trumpets.
