ACTIVITIES
I’lam’s activities, as well as our strategies, capacity building, and fundraising efforts, focused on five main issues/projects:1.Expanding our sources of support and cooperation (Fundraising andNetworking).2.Democratization of Israeli media policies and performances (Advocacy Project).3.Empowering local Palestinian media and media workers (Media EmpowermentProject).4.Awareness raising, outreach and publishing (Outreach Project).5.“Empowerment and Development Project”, co-financed by the EU and HeinrichBoell Foundation (Co-financing Project).
1. FUNDRAISING AND NETWORKING
One of I’lam’s priorities for the first half of 2003 was to expand our sources of support and to strengthen co-operation with existing and new partners. We investedimportant efforts in promoting our work in Israel and abroad, thus broadening ournetworks. On March 2003 Haneen Zoubi, I’lam’s new General Director, was invited toassist to a Seminar in Georgetown University about “Foreign Policy and Leadership.“Afterwards Ms. Zoubi was able to promote I’LAM’s work and to establish importantrelations, thus setting a basis for future cooperation with different organizations andinstitutions. For I’lam it is essential to widen international relations. Then, in fact, wecan only achieve our goals inside Israel, if there is international recognition of therole of media and of I’lam as social change agents. Two main reasons support thisstatement: (1) Media is a fundamental tool for constructing and shaping reality, and(2) Israel is very sensitive to its international image. This trip proved to be very successful since the Open Society Institute agreed tosupport I’lam’s work with $50,000 for one year (July 2003-July 2004, core budget).Other important developments regarding our fundraising activities include anincrease in the support of the Swiss Embassy from $30,000 to $40,000 for ourAdvocacy project. In addition, the Welfare Association and US Israel Women toWomen Foundation confirmed to share common goals and objectives with I’lam andthat there is a serious potential in building a partnership in the near future. In May 2003, Haneen Zoubi was invited by the European Commission to a triporganized for media representatives from Israel. Ms. Zoubi was the only ArabPalestinian that was invited for this information trip. Here she promoted andpresented I’lam’s work to different representatives of the European Commission andto the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). As far as the European Commissionis concerned, we received very positive and encouraging comments about our workand strategic planning. As for the IFJ, I’lam will have further meetings with theirrepresentatives to develop concrete cooperation strategies. In terms of networking at the local and national level, I’lam achieved importantdevelopments. We established strong relations with different NGO’s such as Adalah –
