Rajasthan happens to be the largest state of India with an area of 3.42 lakhsq. km. which boasts of being the only desert of the sub continent, namely theGreat Indian Desert in combination with the Aravali mountain range. Situatedin the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent (23 30' and 30 11' Northlatitude and 69 29' and 78 17' East longitude), Rajasthan is bordered on thewest and northwest by Pakistan, on the north and northeast by the Indianstates of Haryana Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh, on the east and southeast byMadhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh and on the southwest by the state ofGujarat.Tourism has been one of the biggest revenue generators for the state sincelong. Owing to its rich and varied topography, vibrant culture and captivatingfestivities, the State of Rajasthan offers immense tourism delights to thevisitors in the State. Visitors, starting from neighboring states to the far flungcountries throng the state at different times especially during the coolerperiods starting from November to February.

initiated pilot surveys in tenstates including Rajasthan state on a plan to outsource collection activity oftourism statistics for the different states.

was entrusted with collection of tourism statistics for the State of Rajasthan.The pilot survey was for a period of 12 months with the purpose to gainexperience for future surveys.
