Upcoming Police Training Notice

The University at Albany Police Department will be conducting an Active Shooter Law Enforcement training in Husted Hall on August 16th from 5pm-11pm, August 17th from 3pm-9pm, and August 21st from 11am-5pm. Police Officers will be utilizing simunition weapons that look like actual weapons during this training, but are perfectly safe and do not carry live rounds of ammunition. This type of training is essential to ensure the police department is prepared to respond to an actual active shooter event on campus. There will be vocalization and loud noises during the training. The areas will be identified with signs indicating Police Training in Progress. If there are any questions, you can call 442-3131 and speak with a University Police Department Communications Officer. All of the equipment being utilized for training is safe and not dangerous to anyone in the area. We are attempting to limit any inconveniences this may cause and appreciate your cooperation during this time. Each session includes not only class room training but live fire scenarios within some of the same campus buildings and facilities the officers may be called upon to respond to in the event of an actual emergency. During the training officers are responsible for forming contact teams that respond to, localize, and contain any aggressors. Officers utilize handguns and rifles that fire simunition (non-lethal training ammunition) rounds, but are otherwise similar to the duty weapons they carry every day. Training not only incorporates team movement but also safe weapon deployment, loading and re-loading duty firearms, weapon transition, use of force continuum, the possible use of explosive devices by aggressor(s) and situational awareness all during an encounter with one or more aggressors. Officers are trained together to develop our ability deliver coordinated effective response in the event of an active shooter incident.
