Construction has begun in full force - and blasting - along N. Mt. Juliet Road for the road widening project. Thecombined efforts of TDOT, the City of Mt. Juliet, and various utility crews are expected to last around two years. The widening project is the result of Federal stimulus package funds and due to the rapidly growing population of Mt. Juliet - both factors which should net the City funding for a new fire hall in the Providence area. But are MJ andWilson County officials pursuing those funds? See page 3 for the whole story. ~

re and
re-related hazards. The authority for FSC isderived from the AmericanRecovery and ReinvestmentAct (ARRA) of 2009 (PublicLaw 111-5). Congressappropriated a total of $210million for this Fiscal Year(FY) 2009 program.”Donovan said he was forwarding the possiblegrant funding informationto “of
cials of Mt. Juliet whohave in the past discussed working with the countyfor construction of a newpublic safety facility in theProvidence area.”“Obviously with my familyliving in Providence, getting a
re station built on the landdonated for this purpose byCPS Land is very importantto me,” Donovan said. “Thisnew grant program whichis speci
cally earmarkedfor renovation of existing orconstruction of new facilities would be especially useful tothe city and county with thecurrent economic picturehere. I hope that this moneysaving option is seriouslylooked into due to lack of adequate public safetyresources in Mt. Juliet, especially in District 4 dueto the extensive growth.” That “current economicpicture,” however, is onereason why Wilson CountyEmergency ManagementAgency Director John Jewellsaid Tuesday his of
ce isnot actively pursuing thegrant funds. Jewell saidWEMA Planning Of
cer DeeLineberger, who facilitatesgrants for the agency, hadinvestigated the FSC grant, which totals $210 millionnationally. Jewell, as wellas Mt. Juliet City ManagerRandy Robertson, saidLineberger reported thatthe “likelihood of luck withgetting the grant is aroundtwo percent.”“One of the bigrequirements is that thegrant goes to a economicallyde
cient area because of allthe things that have gone onrecently,” Jewell said. “And while Wilson County hashad its licks, we have notsuffered at all the way a lotof areas have.”Indeed, accordingto information FederalEmergency ManagementAgency (FEMA) literatureabout the FSC grants, priorities for the
scal year2009 Federal stimuluspackage FSC grantsinclude: “projects in areasof the country whereunemployment is thehighest” and “projects thatare ready to begin shortlyafterward (i.e. applicantalready owns land and hasrequired permits in hand, etc).” Jewell said that while theland is available – just overan acre was donated by CPSLand upon the developmentof the Providence area forconstruction of a future
rehall and police substation – agrant to build a new
re hall would only jump start theproject: some $750,000 to$800,000for payrollper yearalone tostaff that
re hall would alsobe needed.“The cost of the stationis minor compared to staff requirements,” Jewell noted, adding that he would want
