WHAT THE UNIT OFFERSWHAT THE UNIT OFFERS
1.DEVELOP THE CONTEXT
Students develop a basic understanding of the critical question and hypothesize what they think they will find when they do their research.
2.PLAN THE RESEARCH
Students review the research process inthe context of this unit and decide howto best organize their work in a group. They also discuss the criteria for assessing the research aspect of the project.
3.GATHER INFORMATION
Students work in groups to define the values and concerns of teenagers. They then gather evidence of values andconcerns commonly shown in massmedia, including identifying bias,stereotype, and advertising hooks. They tabulate their data and review hypotheses.
4.INTERPRET AND REFINE
Students work in their groups and as aclass to compare their research results with their description of the values andconcerns of teenagers. They thenindividually summarize what they learned about media portrayals and givea personal answer to the critical question.
5.SHARE INFORMATION
Students first analyze a variety of websites for effective design features, thencreate personal web pages sharing their values and concerns.
6.THINK BACK, THINK AHEAD
Students reflect on what they learnedabout both media and web page designin this unit by first discussing thesetopics as a class, then writing apersonal reflection.
