Hayley HillEDSE 610 May 2009Design a School District
Introduction
Many of the ideas for my school district camefrom the things I both like and dislike about theschool in which I now teach and the school Iattended as a child. One thing I dislike aboutboth is how disharmonious they are with thesurrounding communities and how separateschool life seems from everyday life. I lovethat my childhood school gave students manyopportunities for freedom, and I get sick to mystomach when I consider how limited my ownstudents' choices are. I feel like my studentsnever had the chance to develop decision-making skills, self-motivation, or mutualrespect because of the way they have been

treated at school. Therefore, I tried to createan environment that promotes studentfreedom, both inside and outside theclassroom. I wanted a school that values childand adult literacy (the reading teacher in me, Iguess). I made the school a resource for thecommunity, and I tried to give students afeeling of responsibility for that community. Finally, I tried to make school life more cyclical.I envisioned a calendar and daily schedule thatgives learning a natural feel, so that instead ofcounting down the days to summer vacation, students could view school as a life-long, verypersonal process. While my school district hasobvious flaws, I am proud that it does not shyaway from giving students accountability. Isometimes wonder how much students couldachieve if they felt any sort of ownership overwhat they learned. This design stems from

that basic question.
Governance
My school district is served by a school boardof five members. Two members are electedfrom the local community and another two areappointed by the local mayor. The finalposition is filled by a teacher currently workingat the school. Every two years an appointedand elected member are replaced on theboard, while the teacher position is replacedannually. The board will also have two non-voting members, a parent that is active in theschool's PTA and the school's student bodypresident. There is one head superintendent and twoassistant superintendents, all three hired bythe school district board of education.
