Chapter 1/1 – Low Born & Never Chosen … For as long as I can remember, I always wanted to be a Serein. The more they warned me to stay away from the Serein, the more I wanted to be one of them. As simple as that, really.Of course, there was more. They told me the Serein were dangerous – I thrilled inside. They told me the Serein were evil – I shuddered deliciouslyThey told me the Serein were insane – and I saw the fear in their eyes and wanted thatkind of power so badly, I could taste it in my soul. From the time I was three years old, I was utterly hooked on becoming a Serein.Just one problem - I was low born and never chosen.Yet somehow, I always knew that none of that would matter once I could wear the bluerobes and hide my face behind a small distortion. To be a Serein, I had to become one.So I studied them. I followed them whenever I saw one, watching them float along themain road above our village, their feet nor robes ever touching the ground, and saw themdisappear in a glow up the mountainside where their monastery lay. I asked about themuntil I got hit across the head and told to be quiet – little good that did! beyond scary oldwives tales and all sorts of superstitious nonsense - although, if only the smallest part of that were true ...I didn’t really know what to do but the wish to be someone other, somehow better, anything other than what I was, always burning, burning, burning inside my mind. I spentmy childhood waiting for some kind of opportunity, and when it finally came, I didn’teven recognise it.
