Volm 9 Nmb 45
a C  M
By Dr. Curt De Graa, Pastor o Young Adult Ministries
A look at the spiritual landscape within the evangelical church o America tells me that a paradigm shit is in order. We need to be less about programs and more about relationships.Church isn’t something we go to do. It is something we are. We teach what we know, but we reproduce what we are.The old model o “just tell them what we know” has let too many supposed Christ-ollowers abandoned along the road-way o lie. These well-intentioned believers have been told about the way, but they needsomeone to show them the way. The way-shower (John the Baptist) had disciples. TheWay (Jesus Christ) also had disciples. Today’s church must ollow that same model. For my purposes in this article, let me call the personalization o that disciple-ship model “mentoring”. Steve Farrar denes the concept or us. “Mentoringis a relational experience through which one person empowers another person throughsharing God-given resources.” Synonymous terms include coaching, teaching, and counseling, but those descriptions may be too ormal.Simply stated, each o God’s children needs a riend—as biblically dened. In act, theycould use three riends:
A Pacesetter
—ahead o him
A Peer
—beside him
A Pupil
—ollowing himFriends do lie together. They play together, pray together and stay together throughthick and thin. (Check out Proverbs 17:17 and 27:10.) You see, mentoring is morecaught than taught. It is more horizontal than vertical. It is more incarnational thaninormational.Today’s younger generation, variously categorized as Millennials, Mosiacs andBusters, are looking or riends to help them nd their way home. So let me makea plea or mentoring riendships.Pick at least one o the categories listed above—a pacesetter, a peer or a pupil.Oten, pacesetters are older than we are. Peers are similar in age. Pupils are our juniors. But connect at some level to mentor or be mentored.I you are willing to be a mentor, look or someone to beriend who has threecharacteristics:An
ATTITUDE
o hunger and openness
AVAILABILITY
to spend time together
ACCOUNTABILITY
which involves honestly communicating one’s goalsand expectations at the beginning o the mentoring process. Obviously, the pur-pose o lie on lie is to bring Scripture and its disciplines into the mainstream o our being.New Testament Christianity is meant to be done in community. It’s part o the sanctication process. I the Spirit o God is nudging you toward mentoringsomeone in Young Adult Ministries, mark the box on the Care & Communica-tion Card and I’ll get in touch with you.Remember, you can make a dierence in someone’s lie!

During the recent fooding in the Midwest, many saw newsstories o a house foating down the river, similar to this boatmarina in Calico Rock, Arkansas, which ultimately crashed intoa bridge. (Photo: AP/Baxter Bulletin, Kevin Pieper)Jesus uses a picture like this to illustrate the need to establisha strong spiritual oundation. In Matthew 7:24–27, Jesus explainsthat when the storms o lie come (and they will come) you needa strong spiritual oundation to avoid being swept away. Timeso trial will test the stability o your aith. Is your aith on a solidoundation? What is your plan to strengthen it?Whether you have trusted in Jesus or 40 years or 4 days, we allneed to continually develop and strengthen our spiritual base. Atremendous way to bolster your spiritual base is through the Foun-dations course beginning Sunday, April 6 at 9:15
am
in room 108.
