Major Scale The C Major scale consists of 7 notes. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 CDE FGAB In Western harmony, chords are built in thirds.

You can build these chords by using every other note of the scale. This results in the C Major chord scale. These scales will have a new root note - the root of the chord they represent. These derived scales are known as modes and correspond with the chord listed above. However, the root and chord tones must change to reflect the chords they will be used over.
