n 1876, to commemorate 100 years o independence rom GreatBritain, Archibald M. Willard presented his painting,
Spirit of ‘76,
atthe U.S. Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, PA. The paintingdepicts three generations o Americans fghting or their new nation’sreedom, one o whom is marching along though slightly wounded inbattle. Willard’s powerul portrayal o the strength and determination o the American people in the ace o overwhelming odds inspired millions.The painting quickly became one o the most popular patriotic images inAmerican history. This depiction o courage and character still resonatestoday as the

lives on in our newest Americans.
