t was high drama on Thursday morning at Thiru-moorthy Nagar in Nungambakkam when a young-ster set himself afire right outside his friend’s house.Police say he took the extreme step after the girlcontinued to spurn his love interest for more than sixyears. He died in hospital in the afternoon.Nungambakkam police identified the deceased asSuresh Kumar (24) of Andavar Koil Street in Kodam-bakkam. Suresh, an MSc Computer Science graduatewho was employed in a private computer firm, hadknown Nithya (name changed) for over six years.Police said around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday morning,Suresh came outside Nithya’s house on his motorcy-cle in a foul mood. “After screaming out to someoneinside the house he started to fill a bottle with petrolfrom his motorcycle. Soon he doused himself withthe petrol and set himself on fire,” said an in-vestigating officer.Suresh ran around the street as his body wasengulfed in flames. A few bystanders rushed inand put out the flames and took a severely injuredSuresh to the Government Kilpauk Medical Col-lege hospital, police added.A police team from Nungambakkam that wasinformed about the incident reached the spot andconducted preliminary investigations. “Theyoungster was in love with the girl from his collegedays but the girl seems to have not reciprocated.Following repeatedly failed attempts he turnedsuicidal outside her house today (Thursday) morn-ing,” the officer added.Suresh, who suffered 80 per cent burns on hisbody, succumbed to his injuries around 2 p.m.
