OUT OF WEAKESS MADE STROG . 191\PREFACEIT is in response to a widespread public desire*for at least another volume of sermons by thelate Professor Law, that this book is put forth.Of the sermons published in "The Grand Adventure/ Dr. Law says "All of them are published practically as they were preached, noattempt having been made to modify the style,which, as I am aware, is better adapted to thepulpit than to the printed page." For the sermons and addresses in this volume, the sameadmission must be made. They are printed asthey were delivered.A note has been added to some of the sermonsgiving the circumstances under which they werepreached. In the case of the addresses, this hasnot been possible, there being no indication onthe manuscript, of the special purpose for whichthey were prepared.

A.WISH to pay a tribute to the memory of myfriend, the late Professor Law, of Knox College, Toronto, of whose services not only theChurch, but the whole Dominion of Canada,was suddenly and unexpectedly bereft. To oursorrow and loss, he was taken away in the veryzenith of his powers, at a time when it seemedto us we never more greatly needed his propheticvoice and his guiding hand. But, I think, hedied as he would have wished to die, in the verymidst of his work, ere his eye was dim, or hisnatural force abated.It was my good fortune to hear the lastsermon he ever preached. Little did I think, asI watched from my seat in Old St. Andrew sthat virile, clear-cut face, instinct with life, andmobile with the play of thought and emotion-little did I think, as I listened to his fervid words,and wondered at the splendid workmanship of his discourse, truly the work of a master hand,that I would never again see in life those ex-9
