THE ARCTIC DIFFERS FROM ANTARCTICAGEOLOGICALLY, BIOLOGICALLY AND POLITICALLY.
The Arctic is an ocean surrounded by land. Antarctica is acontinent surrounded by an ocean. Wildlife in the Arctic isdiverse, but limited in abundance. Antarctic wildlife isabundant, but limited in diversity. The Arctic, inhabited formore than 4,000 years, is divided into political regions withdistinct national governments. The Antarctic continent – never inhabited by humankind –is owned by no country, yet claimed by many. In fact, thestewardship of the world’s largest nature preserve ismanaged by an international treaty. This table lists some of the activities and experiences thatmotivate people to travel to the polar regions. You can useit to identify which destination appeals most to you.

Decision 1
 THE ARCTIC OR ANTARCTICA

EXPEDITIONS TO THE POLAR REGIONS AREDIVERSE IN STYLE AND COST.
Three elements affect the cost of a voyage: the durationof the expedition, the passenger capacity of the vessel, and the activities included. Neither region lends itself to“bare bones” travel. You cannot upgrade hotels or cutyour expedition short if you find you have chosen thewrong itinerary or ship.So invest wisely – choose an expedition operated bya company with a solid reputation, and ships that arepurpose-built for polar waters. The price of your expeditionshould include one night of hotel accommodation in theembarkation port in Antarctica. In the Arctic the price of theexpedition should include one night of hotel accommodationbefore and after the voyage, unles the destination is well-served by air transportation. All shipboard meals, and thecost of activities such as landings and Zodiac cruisingshould be included, as well.
TRAVEL TO THE POLAR REGIONS OCCURSDURING THEIR SUMMER MONTHS, WHEN THESUN NEVER SETS ABOVE THE POLAR CIRCLE.
That is from mid-June to early September in the Arcticand from mid-October to mid-March in Antarctica. For both destinations, travel in their late spring and earlysummer is when you encounter the most amount of ice.During a polar midsummer, wildlife is engaged in rearingyoung. During late summer and early autumn, the daysgrow shorter and ice begins to form. Wildlife prepares toreturn to wintering ranges.
