Sharjah: Queen of Green and Sharjah Municipality has announced a partnership to prevent shop owners from going out of business or poisoning their customers. 83 shops have been fined for unplugging their fridges overnight to reduce their electricity bills putting their customers lives in danger from contaminated food. Understanding the underlying causes of their actions and then providing a practical solution for the cause balances economic, health and environmental challenges so all stakeholders needs are met said Gill Wallace Hope, Founding Director of Queen of Green. Inspectors from the municipalitys Food Control Division at the Department of Health inspected around 1,200 food outlets in Sharjah as part of a campaign to promote healthy methods of food preservation and storage. Food, health and safety The campaign confiscated 720kg of food products that were being sold past their expiry dates, said Dr Rasha Ahmad Al Qasimi, Assistant Director-General for Health, Environment and Quality at Sharjah Municipality.

Sharjah food safety campaign also included a number of municipal institutions operating in the food sector and all food establishments in Sharjah. The food sector is witnessing a major expansion in Sharjah, as the municipality has approved the opening of various new food establishments, branches and warehouses that have met the required criteria. Higher risk of food poisoning Gill Wallace Hope, lived and carried out her systems work in 2009 and 2010 in Sharjah, UAE where she saw the systems effects of climate change in the Emirate. As temperatures increased, more AC was used which tripped the electricity causing power outages; which in turn left the food to thaw or heat up in supermarkets and then the supermarket refroze and sold the food to the customers who ended up in hospital with food poisoning. Hope said it is a false economy to pass the problem and the costs from the retail sector to the health sector. Damaging the immune systems of the citizens and residents has a whole life cost to the families and Municipality. Preventing food poisoning Now around 10% of store owners are purposely closing the electricity to save on the soaring electricity bills at the same time as temperatures are rising and more cooling is required for safety. Citing the hot weather and high temperatures in the UAE, Dr Rasha also added that foods such as eggs, cheese and mayonnaise among others are at a higher risk of being contaminated with salmonella, a type of food poisoning caused by the salmonella bacterium. Closing and opening the fridge repeatedly or switching it off during the night will increase the risk of bacteria and therefore food poisoning and infections, said Dr Rasha. Carrots better than sticks Gill Wallace Hope has developed a global brand of green technologies, knowledge and processes to ensure that practical solutions to climate change, environment and health are addressed. It is much cheaper to prevent these issues than to solve them, she said, horizontal collaboration across Government, private, social and citizen sectors are critical. Carrots are much better than sticks for emergency behavioral change and that is part of Queen of Greens Policy to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure positive sustainability.
