intro
Graduate school can be a dicult, even hostile, place tobear or raise a child. Formal support or student parentsremains limited, and inormal norms or arrangementsin our departments oen discourage people rom havingchildren and penalize those who are caring or kids.Nevertheless, grad students, other workers, and eministgroups at the University o Caliornia have organized overmultiple generatons to make campus a less hostile placeor student parents. Tose raising kids while in schoolnow have some resources to draw upon. Tis bookletpresents some o the resources that should be available tocurrent graduate student parents. Its denitely notcomprehensive, and may not be entirely up-to-date. I you are looking or inormation about something thatisn’t covered here, a good place to start would be the“Berkeley Parent’s Network,” an online support andinormation-sharing project. Tere is also a contact liston the back cover.Tis booklet is meant as well to serve as an introductionto, and invitation to join, ongoing organizing campaignsaround issues o concern to student parents, particularly campaigns being craed by the student workers union(UAW 2865) and the Afordability Committee o theVillage Residents Association (VRA). Te union iscurrently involved in contract negotiatons withuniversity management, and issues afecting the lives o student parents are central to these negotiations.

Housing

Student parents can apply or amily housing at Univer-sity Village, which, despite recent rent increases, remainsmarginally less expensive than most housing in the area:
housing.berkeley.edu/livingatcal/studentsamilies.html
Te VRA Afordability Committee recently published areport on the conditions o lie or renters at University Village, which makes clear the continuing need or gradstudent housing subsidies and other orms o support:

As the report notes: “O the households surveyed inUC Berkeley’s amily housing, 39% survive on less than$20,000 a year. Most o those are single-parent, only childamilies, or whom the living wage is $48,288 in AlamedaCounty, according to the MI’s online living wagecalculator.”
