USTA SERVES AWARDS EVE KRAFT EDUCATION & COLLEGESCHOLARSHIPS TO HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS VICTOREA AUSTIN OFPROSPECT, KY & ANDRES GALLO OF FLUSHING, N.Y.
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., June 3, 2009
- USTA Serves – Foundation for Academics.Character. Excellence., the philanthropic and charitable entity of the United StatesTennis Association, announced today that Victorea Austin of St. Francis High Schoolin Louisville, Ky., and Andres Gallo of Archbishop Molloy High School in Briarwood,N.Y., have been named recipients of the $2,500 Eve Kraft Education & CollegeScholarship. USTA Serves has granted 71 high school students a variety of collegescholarships this spring, totaling $379,000.An objective of USTA Serves is to encourage children to pursue their goals andhighest dreams by succeeding in school and becoming responsible citizens. TheEve Kraft Education & College Scholarship is bestowed upon two high schoolseniors, one male and one female, who have excelled academically, demonstratedcommunity service, played tennis in an organized program and who reside in aneconomically disadvantaged community. This scholarship is named in memory ofEve Kraft of Princeton, N.J., a tennis pioneer who introduced thousands of youngpeople to the game of tennis, particularly in disadvantaged communities. Kraftbecame the first-ever women’s varsity tennis coach at Princeton in 1971 and led theteam to an undefeated record during her three-year tenure. She later founded andbecame director of the USTA Center for Education and Recreational Tennis inPrinceton.Austin has excelled on the tennis court, in the classroom and most importantly, as amember of her community. Austin, a USTA Southern Section ranked player, is aninstructor with the Rising Stars of Kentucky Tennis program, a non-profit junior tennisorganization. She has been honored as the female athlete of the year at her school,was runner-up in the Southern Section Arthur Ashe Essay contest and plays on thebasketball team as well. She has maintained a solid GPA in college prep courseswhile participating on the Step Team, Student Advisory Board, African-AmericanVoices (president), Speech and Debate team and the Diversity, Yearbook and PromCommittees. Helping others has been a staple in Austin’s young life; she hasvolunteered countless hours with organizations such as the Center for Women andChildren, Home of the Innocents, Planned Parenthood, Dress for Success and BigBrother/Big Sister. Austin plans to study psychology and sports medicine at SalemCollege.A young man with very diverse interests, Gallo has maintained an excellent GPA inhonors courses while still finding time to volunteer and pursue studies in music.
