New school classification index measures students progress

Hawaiis public schools are now rated on a new accountability system that officials say will help schools better prepare students for success in college and careers. The so-called Strive HI system largely replaces academic mandates of the federal No Child Left Behind law that required schools meet rising reading and math proficiency targets or face sanctions. Hawaii in May was granted a waiver from key NCLB requirements by the U.S. Department of Education in exchange for adopting high standards and an alternative accountability system. STRIVE HI PERFORMANCE INDEX Schools can earn up to 400 points in the areas of achievement, growth, readiness and narrowing the achievement gap.

TOTAL POINTS
Achievement: Test scores in reading, math and science. Students in grades 3 through 8 and grade 10 take the state exam. >> Reading (0-40 pts) >> Math (0-40 pts) >> Science (0-20 pts)

Growth: Each students annual progress is compared with the progress of other students in the state with a similar score history on reading and math tests. >> Reading (0-50 pts) >> Math (0-50 pts)
