YOUTH CLEASIG HIS WAY.BY REV HERY KOLLOCK, D. D.Psalm cxix. 9.Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way ? Bytaking heed thereto, according to thy icord. We are born in a state of depravity ; our affec-tions by nature are alienated from God, and we areprone to evil. This is a truth that does not restmerely upon the unequivocal testimony of the scrip-tures, though nothing can be more explicit than theirlanguage on this point : it is proved also by dailyobservation and universal experience. It is recog-nised in all the restraints, the punishments, the vigi-lance, that are found necessary in the education of those, even of the tenderest years. But this depravity, perceptible even in infancy, becomes more perceptible in youth. The seeds of evil germinate as we advance in life ; and not onlythe heart, but the i way" the general course of con-duct, becomes polluted. ot that all, who are notthe subjects of renewing grace, are equally sinful. Some rush to excesses at which more modest sinnerstremble : such are those young persons who pour36 SERMO LXXV1.forth their blasphemies against the God of heaven, and deride the faith of the Christian, and the sacri-fice of the great Redeemer : such are those whoearly plunge into every scene of vice, and beforethey have attained the years of manhood, drink the
cup of sensual pleasure to its dregs : such are thosewhose conversation is marked by obscenity or pro-fanity; who alternately wound modesty, and sportwiih the name of the tremendous God, or in profanelevity imprecate upon themselves that " damnationwhich slumbereth not.'" Though the " way" of theseand similar heaven-daring youth has a peculiar aw-fulness and depth of guilt, yet it is not they alonewho need to be cleansed : it is necessary, indispen-sably necessary, for all who have not experiencedthe regenerating influences of the Holy Spirit.Though by the restraining grace of God you mayhave been kept from these gross sins ; though yourexternal deportment may have been decent ; thoughyou may have many moral virtues and amiable qua-lifications ; though you may resemble that interestingyoung ruler who came to the Redeemer, to whombut " one thing was wanting;" yet you still need tobe cleansed by the Spirit, and the blood of Jesus, and without it you must for ever be undone. Is it not true, my dear young friends, that thegreater part of you must be placed in one or theother of these two classes ? I know, and from thebottom of my heart I bless God for it, there aresome of a different character ; some who remembertheir Creator and Redeemer in the days of theiryouth; some whose early years are sanctified byvital piety ; some, the hope of this flock, and the fu-ture pillars of this church, who, instead of laying upa store of anguish and remorse for the time to come.MISCELLAEOUS. 37are, under the influences of the Spirit, preparing forusefulness, when the heads of the older followers of Jesus shall he mouldering in the dust. On such maythe dearest blessing of God Most High ever rest !
May they enjoy the peculiar benediction of that Sa-viour who delights in the early convert ! May theirnumber be augmented ! But, my brethren, how feware these, in comparison with those who are eitherindulging in gross vice, or occupied only with theworld ? How many of our youth, over whom wemust weep while we see them regardless of eternity, careless of maintaining communion with God inprayer, neglecting his word, " lovers of pleasuremore than lovers of God," unaffected by the dying-love of Jesus? How many who, like that unhappyyoung prodigal in the gospel, have left their heaven-ly Father's house, have endeavoured to withdrawfrom him and to shake off his authority, and forgetfulof the plenty and felicity which he is ready to bestow, are endeavouring, vainly endeavouring, to satisfythemselves with the husks of earth ?Oh ! that at last, you, my young friends, wouldlike him, " come to yourselves ;" would feel yourguilt and your misery ; would resolve to retraceyour steps; would desire the renewal of your hearts, the reformation of your lives, the salvation of yoursouls ! Oh ! that you would cry, with a deep senseof the importance of the question, " Wherewithalshall the young cleanse their way ?"This is to be done,I. By " taking heed to their ways ;" by circumspec-tion and serious consideration.God, in our conversion, deals with us as reason*able beings. Those who are savingly brought to38 SERMO LXXVI.him, are first made to pause in their career, and so-
