Our World Belongs to God, Article 22 (also Jeremiah 31:7-14)
7 This is what the LORD says: "Sing with joy for

Jacob; shout for the foremost of the nations. Make your
praises heard, and say, 'LORD, save your people, the
remnant of Israel.'

8 See, I will bring them from the land of the north and

gather them from the ends of the earth. Among them will
be the blind and the lame, expectant mothers and women in
labor; a great throng will return.

9 They will come with weeping; they will pray as I bring

them back. I will lead them beside streams of water on a
level path where they will not stumble, because I am
Israel's father, and Ephraim is my firstborn son.

10 "Hear the word of the LORD, you nations; proclaim it in
distant coastlands: 'He who scattered Israel will gather
them and will watch over his flock like a shepherd.'
11 For the LORD will deliver Jacob and redeem them from
the hand of those stronger than they.
12 They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion; they will rejoice in the bounty of the LORD—the grain, the
new wine and the olive oil, the young of the flocks and herds. They will be like a well-watered garden, and they will
sorrow no more.
13 Then young women will dance and be glad, young men and old as well. I will turn their mourning into gladness; I
will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow.
14 I will satisfy the priests with abundance, and my people will be filled with my bounty," declares the LORD.
Brothers and sisters,

Sometimes in church we can say things that make an awful lot of sense to us because we’ve been around it for a long time. We have a churchy code – and if we’ve been through catechism classes and listened to enough sermons – we can decode it pretty quickly…

But we always have to be careful – because what we assume when
we say certain things doesn’t necessarily apply to someone else
sitting in the pews…

For example – our contemporary testimony uses these words –
Prophet, Priest and King – to describe who Jesus is…Now it
comes from Calvin – it’s in our Catechism – we hear it in our
sermons…we know these are good things…

…but do we all know that?

Prophets – maybe we watch the news and start thinking about guys like Warren Jessop and his compound down in Colorado – he calls himself the prophet – and he runs a polygamist cult.

When Israel spurned God's love—
lusting after other gods,
trusting in power and wealth,
and hurting the weak—
God scattered them among the nations,
yet kept a faithful remnant
and promised them the Messiah:
a prophet to speak good news,
a king to crush evil and rule the earth with justice,
a priest to be sacrificed for sinners.
God promised to forgive their sins
and give them a new heart and a new spirit,
moving them to walk in his ways. – CT 22

Priests – they don’t get much good press these days – guys in
collars and robes – who are the butt of many jokes on late night
television.

And kings – or queens – well we still have a bit of a connection to
the monarchy – but even then…most people have a ridiculous
notion of what a monarchy is about these days…

It’s why it’s good for us to review these things – because when we know we often let familiarity lessen their impact in our hearts and minds – and when we don’t we feel left out…

So tonight – we’re going to look to the contemporary testimony
and see these offices and their place within our faith.

I. Now we’re going to begin where we’ve started the past few
weeks. The contemporary testimony requires us to think about
our sin in order to understand our redemption

This is the foundation that the writers have laid so that we can
build on it – and we’ve seen it through the past few weeks – we
begin with sin and come to a greater realization of wonderful grace
– and the same is true in understanding these roles of prophet,
priest and king.

After John Calvin came along with this Munus Triplex – the
official term for the threefold office – to describe who Jesus was
anointed to be – or who he was “Christed” to be – the theologians
that followed started to draw lines that connected those offices to
the work of redeeming particular categories of sin.

And just as there are three offices these theologians say that there
are three basic categories for sin:
2
i. The first of these is ignorance

I don’t particularly like this term – it comes from an older time – and theologically it’s more a symptom of sin than a category. This is why we’re going to connect this category with original sin…the pathological model that we’ve been working with so far.

When we look at sin like a disease like we have been doing then
we understand the symptoms as being things that hold us back. It’s
like a cold doesn’t let you breath fully or an infected toe doesn’t let
you walk properly. Original sin keeps us from reaching our
spiritual and moral ability…

Some examples from scripture to solidify our thinking…
OGenesis 6 tells us that our thoughts are continually evil –
that’s part of the Noah story…
ORomans chapter 1 tells us that we have a heart problem – that
our hearts have been darkened by sin
O2 Corinthians 4 verse 4 tells us that we’ve been “blinded by
the god of this age”

And I could go on – but I think we get the point. Original sin – the
diseased nature that we’ve inherited – causes us to be ignorant of
the good and held back from what is right.

ii. The second category is guilt – or our personal sin as we’ve been
talking about it

We may understand that sin has been passed on to us through the
generations – but weKNOW the things that we’ve done wrong. If
we take the time and examine our lives against the Law of God we
know there are places we’ve fallen short.
