whomabouttwo-thirdscomefromEuropeandthebalancefromNorthAmerica.Aboutone-thirdisfromgovemmentandpolitics,andtwothirdsarefromfinance,industry,labor,education,andcommunications.Themeetingisprivateinordertoencourage
frank
andopendiscussion.BilderbergtakesitsnamefromthehotelinHolland,wherethefirstmeetingtookplaceinMay
1954.
Thatpioneeringmeetinggrewout
of
theconcernexpressedbyleadingcitizens
On
bothsides
of
theAtlanticthatWesternEuropeandNorthAmericawerenotworkingtogetherascloselyastheyshouldon
COmmon
problems
of
criticalimportance.Itwasfeltthatregular,off-the-recorddiscussionswouldhelpcreateabetterunderstanding
of
thecomplexforcesandmajortrendsaffectingWesternnationsinthedifficultpost-warperiod.TheCold
War
hasnowended.
But
inpracticallyallrespectstherearemore,notfewer,commonproblems-fromtradetojobs,frommonetarypolicytoinvestment,fromecologicalchallengestothetask
of
promotinginternationalsecurity.
It
ishardtothink
of
anymajorissueineitherEuropeorNorthAmericawhoseunilateralsolutionwouldnothaverepercussionsfortheother.Thustheconcept
of
aEuropean-Americanforumhasnotbeenovertakenbytime.Thedialoguebetweenthesetworegionsisstill-evenincreasingly-critical.WhatisuniqueaboutBilderbergasaforumisthebroadcross-section
of
leadingcitizensthatareassembledfornearlythreedays
of
informalandoff-the-recorddiscussionabouttopics
of
currentconcerncspeciallyinthefields
of
foreignaffairsandtheinternationaleconomy;thestrongfeelingamongparticipantsthatinview
of
thedifferingattitudesandexperiences
of
theWesternnations,thereremainsaclearneedtofurtherdevelopanunderstandinginwhichtheseconcernscanbeaccommodated;theprivacy
of
themeetings,whichhasnopurposeotherthantoallowparticipantstospeaktheirmindsopenlyandfreely.

short,Bildcrbergisasmall,flexible,informalandoff-the-recordinternationalforuminwhichdifferentviewpointscanbcexpressedandmutualunderstanding
enhanced,
Bilderberg'sonlyactivityisitsannualConference.Atthemeetings,noconclusionsarereached,norecommendationsaremadeandnopolicystatementsissued.Since
1954,
fifty-sixconferenceshavebeenheld.Thenames
of
