Common Myths About Domestic Violence
by Patti Austin
Domestic violence is not a problem in my community.
Michigan State Police records from1997 show that a woman is killed by a partner or former partner about once a week inMichigan. Domestic violence often leads to homicide. In 1998, the Michigan State Policereported more than 5,000 victims of domestic violence in Oakland County. It has beenestimated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation that a woman is being beaten every 15seconds.
Domestic violence only happens to poor women and women of color.
Domestic violencehappens in all kinds of families and relationships. Persons of any class, culture, religion, sexual orientation, marital status, age, and sex can be victims or perpetrators of domesticviolence. Acquiring a high quality of education does not exempt a person from domesticviolence. Demographics play a small role in determining the capacity of a person in hurtinganother. Anyone can be violent. Anyone can be a victim.
Some people deserve to be hit.
Certainly a myth. No one is worthy of being abused. Theabuser is the sole responsible for the abuse, no one else. An abuser does have a mentalitythat should kept from happening. There's no such thing as provoking an abuser. Also, there'snothing right about hitting a person among family members. Domestic violence should not betolerated and must be punished by law.
Alcohol, drug abuse, stress, and mental illness cause domestic violence.
Drinking alcohol, being stressed or so may go along with domestic violence but aren't actually causingdomestic violence. According to the Michigan Judicial Institute, Domestic Violence Benchbookin 1998, p. 1.6 " 1.7, abusers oftentimes use those to excuse them for their violence. According to Michigan Judicial Institute, Domestic Violence Benchbook in 1998, p. 1 " 5, anabuser starts to hurt someone when he has learned and chooses to abuse. And according toagain Michigan Judicial Institute, Domestic Violence Benchbook in 1998, p. 1 " 8, mentalillness is often used as an excuse for domestic violence, but really is rarely caused by it.
