Chapter 1
I guess you could say my life was pretty normal in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. That is, until the day I was Chosen. Just a few minutes before I was Chosen I was livingmy average life, talking to my best friend Amber. All she did was babble on about howawesome Kyle Grant’s (my ex-boyfriend who was still in love with me) party was lastnight.“Do you think his parents knew about the beer?” She asked. I laughed lightly andsaid, “Are you crazy? His parents are easy going, but their not
that
laid back. Were theyeven home?” Amber just shrugged. My eyes widened in understanding. “You drank didn’t you? Amber!” She just mumbled and gave me a guilty smile. “Amber. That’sillegal. Were only 16.” She rolled her eyes and said, “I know, but seriously Kell look mein the eyes and tell me that you’ve never done something you shouldn’t have. I was justtrying it anyway and I’m 17.” I looked Amber directly in the eyes and said, “I stole acookie from the jar before dinner when I was six.” “Ohmygod I’m so sick of your perfectimage shit. Do something spontaneous every once in a while.” “Amber breaking the lawisn’t spontaneous, it’s stupid.” “Whatever. But Kyle looked insanely hot last night. I can’t believe you gave him up. The second he gets over you I’m getting him!” I laughed a littleand then Amber blurted something that surprised me.“Kell you look like serious crap. Are you ok? Are you sweating?” I opened mylocker and looked at myself in the mirror. She was right. I was sweating and I had bagsunder my eyes that were so deep they could have been ditches.“Oh god. You’re right. What happened to me?” My nose began to tingle, like itdoes when you’re about to sneeze. I quickly grabbed a Kleenex and sneezed. It wasn’t on purpose, but I caught a glimpse of the tissue before I tossed it in the trash. It was coveredin blood. My first and obvious thought was a bloody nose. Simple. Not scary or serious. My throat had been itchy all day, but it was something that just went to the back of my head with all the other crap in my life. I felt a cough coming on so I put my mouthto my shoulder and out it came. It wasn’t a normal cough. It was thick and wet as it cameup my throat. I took a look at the shoulder of my Portsmouth High School sweatshirt andit was covered in blood.Amber’s eyes were wide with terror. “Kell what’s happening?” I was about tospeak, but all that came out was more blood. Amber ran down the hall yelling that shewas going to get help.I sprinted to the bathroom before any more blood could come out. A truckload of  blood washed into the sink. I was disgusted, but I couldn’t do anything about it. All of a

sudden the space between my eyebrows began to burn like hell. I coughed up another truckload of blood and looked at myself in the mirror above the sink.I looked at my usual hazel eyes and saw that they were becoming a strange shadeof bluish-green. The bags under them were totally gone. I could have just beenimagining, but it seemed like the angles of my face were becoming more defined. Iwasn’t sweating anymore, but there were specks of blood here and there on my face. Iquickly pulled my long auburn curls into a messy bun before any more blood could come. One thing that really caught my attention was my skin. It was paler since the last time Isaw it. It was so strange to see myself who usually had a nice medium tone with such pale skin. All of a sudden, the blood came out again, but this time it was my ears. I took two paper towels and stuffed them in my ears. I was ready to scream. The space between myeyebrows felt like I had pressed a hot curling iron to it. I heard the door swing open and Iassumed it was Amber. Instead a tall, beautiful woman that I had never seen in my lifewalked through the door. She had the darkest of brown hair that was so close to touching black but didn’t. Her eyes were a piercing ice blue and she had a pink, sparkly mask thathad little cracks in it everywhere, yet it was still beautiful. She was wearing skinny jeanswith black stiletto boots and a pretty pink and white blouse. I swung around to meet her gaze. Her beauty was astonishing. She made me feel safe and kind of happy at thisstrange moment.“Child, you are Kelly Greene, correct?” I nodded at this lovely stranger. “I amSoleil Bonheur.” Tears were streaming down my cheeks from the pain as I asked, “Whatis happening to me? Am I dying?” Her short laugh was like music to my ears. “Oh, mydear child no. You’re in the process of becoming a vampire.” Horror struck through me.“I’m becoming a monster?” She stiffened and I swear I saw the smallest bit of anger flashthrough her eyes. “My dear, Novizio you must understand that vampires are notmonsters. They’re simply another species. I would see this more as a privilege not a punishment. You’ve been Chosen by Nottata and Asterisco.” Her warm, safe vibe came back and she opened her arms to me. I stepped into her arms and shuddered. She was socold. I stuttered through my tears as I said, “I’m-I’m becoming like you?” She noddedand I stepped out of her arms.“The pain is over for today my dear, but it will come back. Your Change will take7 days. Through out those days you will end up coughing up all your blood. Vampireshave no need for our own blood. Oh and your eyes will change blue as a reaction to theChange. I suggest you do not come back to your school. Say your goodbyes now, then--”I interrupted her with a shrilly, “Goodbyes?” She gave me a sympathetic smile then said,“Yes. You’ll be joining me and all the other vampires on The Island of Full Moons. Youhave four more days with your family not including this one, so spend it wisely. On thefifth day a car will be waiting outside your home at 8:00 p.m. waiting to escort you to theairport. The last two days of your Change will be the most painful. When you get into thecar take these and the pain will go away for a while.” She handed me two horse pills.

I stuffed the pills in my pocket then asked, “Ok I get the blood, but what this thingon my forehead that burns like hell?” She laughed and said, “That’s your mask comingin. It will show your talent and it will show that you’re a vampire. But your talent will not just you appear. You must discover it.” I nodded while still crying.“Oh my dear, Kelly. I know this can be hard, but it’s your destiny. It’s a cloudyday so the sun should not bother you, if it shall, get to shade immediately. It’s veryirritating to a vampire when sun touches them. Now get home and let me help with thatlittle tattoo.” She pulled concealer out of her pocket and applied it on my “tattoo.” Ick.Just the thought of having a tattoo had always made my stomach twist and woop-de-doonow I got one. She hugged me one last time before she made a swift stride out the door.I blinked back the shock wondering if what I just saw was real. Tears were stillgoing down my face as I went to my locker and shoved everything into my backpack. Iwent to my (favorite) homeroom teacher’s room. Mrs. Bellioz was sitting at her desk grading papers until she looked up at me.“Kelly whats wrong?” She got up and came to hug me. “I just came to saygoodbye.” Mrs. Bellioz stepped back to examine me then she quietly said, “Goodbye?Where are you going?” I quietly muttered, “Hell.” But she didn’t hear me. “I’m goingsome where far away and I’m pretty sure this is the last time you’ll see me.” She began toget tears in her eyes and she ran back to her desk. She grabbed something and came back to me. “If that’s so then I want you to have this.” She dropped the diamond bracelet I’dalways admired into my hand. “Oh no, I couldn’t,” I choked through my tears. “I’ve seenyou eyeing it and I want you to have it.” She closed my fist over it and hugged me. Shewhispered, “Goodbye, dear.” I whispered bye and ran down the hall before I could cryanymore. I clasped the bracelet around my wrist and got ready to leave. Forever. Before I went out the main doors I made sure I looked tear free. I could spot myFord Edge from the window, so I walked out the doors heading straight for it.“Kellz! Babe!” I turned my head in the direction I heard my name comingfrom and saw Kyle walking straight toward me. I walked away from him as fast as Icould, but he caught up and put his arm over my shoulder. I shrugged it off and lookedhim in the eyes. “Kyle, we’re done. We’ve been done for 2 months. You need to moveon. I’m never coming back anyway. So this is goodbye.” I began to walk away, but hegrabbed me by my shoulders and turned me around. “What do you mean goodbye? Youcan’t leave…I-I love you.” I saw hurt flash through his eyes. “Well it’s a little late for that. I’m sorry, but I have no choice. Bye.” “Well do you want my goodbye present?” Iturned around again and he pulled me into a soft, gentle kiss. I should’ve pushed himaway, but I guess my heart wanted something else. He eventually let go and hugged me.While we were hugging, he whispered in my ear, “I love you Kellz. Please come and visitme if you can. I’ll call you later.” I nodded and ran towards my car.Just as I got to my car, the sun shined through the clouds. My skin began to feelall tingly and uncomfortable. Kind of like when you have poison ivy and you know you
