2013 Timoteo Team Surveys

In 2013 Timoteo conducted a league-wide survey to better understand its players. 142 surveys were collected, which is short from a 100% of the league, but it does provide a good sample of those who make up the league. Some teams had full participation and others only had about half of their teams fill out the surveys, so teams with small participation will obviously not be as accurate. Timoteo has players that attend 52 different schools and that live in 19 different zip codes throughout the city. The following chart shows the range in grades represented in the league:
Grade 0 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 alum freshman GED Grad Grand Total # 16 1 11 9 13 28 38 21 1 2 1 1 142

The following document is an in-depth look at our findings based on the surveys, both league-wide as well as teams.

Timoteo is made up of about 50% Hispanic and 50% black players. It appears that most of the teams are predominantly one way or the other. The Cowboys are the only team that is 100% one race, while the Panthers seem to be the most equal between the two categories. Most of those in the other category identify themselves as black and Hispanic.

30% of the league stated that their parents graduated from college. What was surprising is that 92% of the league stated that they are planning on going to college. Though 92% of the league desire to go to college, only 44% finish their homework on time most of the time and 43% of the

league finishes their homework some of the time. 25% of the league stated that they would like help with their homework if it were offered through Timoteo. Looking at all of this it is evident that there is a desire for a brighter future, one that includes a higher education. To get to college, students need to take their homework more seriously. There seems to be a need among Timoteo players to build this bridge. The past few years Timoteo staff has been able to take some students on college visits as well as build a relationship with Esperanza College. Currently we have a handful of students attending Esperanza College; some state that they are there as a direct result of the influence of Timoteo. Question #7 Have you ever been arrested? 63% of the league does NOT live with their fathers. That said, 60% stated that their fathers had daily interactions with them. It should also be noted that 7 players skipped filling out this question all together (the most skipped question on the survey), making me think it was simply too painful of a question to fill out, or possibly it touched on an issue the players didnt even want to deal with. 88% of the players said they had an adult outside of Timoteo to talk to about their school. 97% of the league strongly agreed or agreed that they felt supported by an adult associated with Timoteo.

That said there has been a shift in the league the past few years during Timoteo games. Each year there seems to be fewer fights that take place on Timoteo Saturdays. A great deal of this is attributed to the friendships being built among the different teams as well as the intentional effort by Timoteo staff to create a non-violent culture.

It appears, however, that if the churches stepped up their efforts a little more in building relationships with the players and supporting them on game days, that these percentages could increase quite a bit.

It appears that the majority of the league has never experimented with drugs or alcohol. Based on conversations with players and Facebook posts, this number seems a bit skewed. On several surveys, players circle that they had experimented with drugs or alcohol, only to mark it out and put no. It seems like many put no because they did not want to get caught, or did not want Timoteo staff to know they were doing drugs or alcohol.

The Majority of the league said that the head of their household had full time jobs. We were not able to discover what kind of jobs they have, and whether or not they were receiving a living wage. 63% of the league said that they did not have a job, but that they would like to. Timoteo seems ripe for an employment harvest! The Timoteo summer camp is one way we are able to hire 8 youth for summertime employment. We may want to consider how we can expand this throughout the city to employ many other youth! We may also want to think of ways to create jobs, such as training youth to re-finish hardwood floors, construction, auto mechanics, etc. Timoteo could be a great hub to provide the accountability and infrastructure to hire many of our youth and young adults.
