Editorial
All the Ups and Downs!
The decision by Queen Mother F.F. not to accept promotionfrom Group Two to Group Onegenerated some discussion atthe Annual General Meetingand the Committee Meeting in particular. There is both a philosophic and pragmatic reason why theAssociation developed therules about promotion andrelegation.By 1991 there were tenmember clubs and ChewReservoir did not have enoughboats so that we could all fishtogether. It was unthinkableto exclude Chew as a venue sowe had to divide into twogroups. How to divide the groupsbecame the most serious problem the Association hasyet faced. Some membersfavoured a division by merit.Others were opposed to thisand came up with proposals for selection by lot, or ageographical division. The1991 season was fished withthe groups decided by lot andone Club resigned for that year.A special Meeting held atGrafham on 11
th
. October 1991reversed this decision andfuture groupings have beendecided by merit. For those Clubs who did notwant the matches to be toocompetitive a compromise wasreached so that promotion wasvoluntary. Last season’sdecision by Queen Mother notto accept promotion was thesecond time this has happened. With membership fluctuatingonly one place in each groupcan be guaranteed. Thewinner of each group willeither remain or be promoted. All the other group memberswill be influenced by thenumber of teams at any onetime. This year, with an extra group, there was considerablemovement with more than oneteam in each of last year’sthree groups having to movedown to the group below. This rule is not sacrosanct andcan be changed at a GeneralMeeting. Refusing promotionhas only happened twice in thetwenty years (this year) of theAssociation. In both casesbecause the club felt theywould be more comfortablestaying in that group. However members may nowfeel that since this privilege isonly available to winning clubsand extending choice to allother teams would make thegroups impossible to arrange, itis time to reconsider.
The Weather
I suspect that we have all heardthat the Met. Office hasforecast a high probability of a‘B.BQ’ summer. The last two years have givengood fly- fishing weather withmany days of cloud and cooltemperatures. Last year, in particular, the fish remained inthe surface almost every time Ifished. It is two years since I last useda DI7 and it has remained in acupboard ever since. If theforecast is right we may haveto get these lines ‘out of hiding’, make sure they are stilluseable and always carry one Not a possibility I am viewingwith any great withenthusiasm.

With no official match reportbeing available I have spokento a number of anglers whofished in the match. Theymade the followingobservations.Bewl was not in the bestcondition. The water wasquite coloured with greenalgae. There had been vastblooms of dapnia in Bewl thisyear and the fish were fightingfit. Even though the fish werequite high in the water, sadlyon the day, there seemed littleevidence of much feeding untilquite late in the afternoon.Even though dapnia had beenthe main food typical dapniafeeders methods did not seemto work too well. Themajority of fish which werecaught were taken on nymphs. The washing line on slow sink lines seemed the best method. The day was bright, sunny andwarm with a gentle breezefrom the west. The best drift was across thedeep water, drifting from FerryPoint onto the point of Chingley Wood.A number of anglers did notcatch until after 4.0pm. perhapsinfluence by the angle of thesun.Only one angler (PhilThompson from the FishHawks Team – pictured below)managed a limit. His timebonus proved critical since theBewl Bridge ‘A’ Team had onemore fish than the winningFish Hawks Team. Myinformation is that thedifference was only one poundin weight.

weight of 2lbs 7oz per fish is, in my memory, the best in the Association’shistory. Not only that, but , atleast at the start of the match, with conditions less than perfect a rod average of justunder four and ONLY one blank - Group Two had a prettygood match.Mark Brinkman of GrafhamW.F.A., the organising Club, reported that ‘the weather forecast was for sunshine allday and although it started withfull sun, it soon clouded over to become near idealconditions; with a moderateSE-SW breeze’.At the start, almost all the boats headed for the NorthShore. The majority headedto G Buoy. This worked wellin the early part of the match but boat pressure eventuallyworked against the anglers andit became more difficult in theafternoon.Sag Grifiths, (pictured) whohad the best bag, stayed in thisarea. He finished just before3.00pm. He used a very fastsink line (DI8) with a sunburstand coral booby and pullingthe flies up, through the fish.Mark Brinkman (Grafham)with 8 fish and Ron Lusardi(Iver) with 6 fish found HedgeEnd almost deserted. Theyused a fast glass line withnymhs and cormorants to become best boat. The successful Navy/Marinesteam also deserted G.Buoy, although they concentrated onthe corner of Church Bay,where the fish were close in.With back to back wins the Navy/Marines are on a roll! The last two rounds of theChallenge Table are on Chew – their
home water
so it looksgood for them!
