APA CHEAT SHEET


Here are the three reference formats that youll probably use the most: [Note: These formats use a hanging indentthe first line of each reference starts at the left margin and following lines are indented.]

BOOKS Authors last name, first initial. (year). Title of book. City, State where the book was published: Publishing Company. Examples: One author Frankl, V. (1984). Mans search for meaning. New York, NY: Simon & Schuster. Two authors Noaks, L., & Wincup, E. (2004). Criminological research: Understanding qualitative methods. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage Publications.

ARTICLES FROM AN ITT TECH DATABASE Authors last name, first initial. (Year). Title of article. Name of Magazine, Newspaper, or Journal. Volume # (issue). Retrieved from [Name of Database]. Example: Lord, L. (2003). A first lady of many firsts. US News and World Report, 135(20). Retrieved from: [Name of database].

WEBSITES With a website, you may not have all the information, so put only what you can find. Do not begin with a date or www. If there isnt any author, begin with the title of the article or page. If there isnt any author, article, or page name, begin with the name of the website.

Retrieved from http://www.smileycentral.com. [Note: No author] ALPHABETICAL (ABC) ORDER Alphabetize all references that are together. To alphabetize: 1. 2. 3. 4. First preference is by the authors last name. If no author is listed, use a corporate author. If no author or a corporate author is listed, use the title of the article. If no author, corporate author, or title of an article is listed, use the name of the website, book, magazine, etc. This will probably happen only with websites.
