Teacher Tales: A Digital Storytelling Experience

As educators we all have experiences that are memorable, thought-provoking, and/or
inspirational. While we may not recognize it at the time, these experiences have a
profound impact on how we think, act, teach and learn.

Task
Your task is to capture one of your most memorable moments as an educator in a 2-3 minute
digital story. This could be an event that happened in your classroom, an experience with a
particular student, or a memory you share with a colleague. It can be humorous, serious,
insightful, scary, adventurous, etc. , but it should have impacted you as an educator in one way
or another. When choosing your topic think about the questions below.

• What experience has had an impact on you as an educator? Why?

• What emotions are attached with this event?

• Why is this event significant? How has it shaped your views, teaching practices, or
interactions with others?

• What meaning might this have to others?

Overall Goals
• Create a thoughtful, well-planned digital story based upon your experiences as an
educator that will be shared with your peers.

• Understand how design and literacy components support a personal narrative by

conveying meaning and emotion.

• Learn how to utilize resources that will help you in gathering media and constructing your
digital story.

Process
A key resource that will assist you in the digital storytelling process is the GBN Digital Storytelling
Wiki. It is wise to bookmark this page or save it to your Delicious account.

1. Narration
Great digital stories stem from a well written, thoughtful narrative. Write a 1-2 page
(double spaced) personal narrative that describes an event based on the criteria above.
Include important details that help focus your story and bring meaning to the message
you are trying to convey. Note that you will be sharing your story with others as part of
the production process.
2. Storyboard

The storyboard is where all of your planning occurs. It illustrates the flow and continuity of
your story including visuals, audio, transitions, and the emotions you are trying to convey.
This is where you will be evaluated on the critical thinking behind your story.

3. Digital Story

Your digital story is your final product. This should be a 2-3 minute movie that
incorporates the following:

• Engaging Introduction

• Logical Organization

• Effective Visuals and Audio

• Effective Pacing and Timing

• Creativity and Consistency

• Compelling Ending

4. Portfolio

Once your stories are completed we will be showcasing each story to your peers. Upon
viewing your digital story, you will be required to turn in the following:

• A copy of your written narration with your edits

• Storyboard

• Any peer reviews

• Digital Story (submitted electronically)
