Does Ekklesia mean ‘church’?
No. The first English translation of the Bible (Tyndale’s Translation circa 1524) translated theGreek word Ekklesia as ‘congregation’ or ‘assembly’. Most modern Bible translations translateEkklesia as ‘church’ out of convenience to the readers. However, that does not mean it is anaccurate translation. Webster’s Dictionary defines church as ‘a building for public and especiallyChristian worship’. However, not one Scripture reference in the Bible connects Ekklesia with abuilding for worship.
