NG YOUR OWN COURSEWORK. NAME OF TRACK: Lonely Boy ARTIST: The Black Keys 1. Why did you choose the text you are analysing? I like the artists music, as well as having their album. Whilst I had previously seen the video and enjoyed it very much. 2. In what context did you encounter it? It was shown to me by a peer in a Media Studies Lesson. 3. What influence do you think this context might have had on your interpretation of the text? It is possible that I may have shown to like it enthustically as the other people there seemed to like it to, in order to fit it. But when watching it realised I didnt have to fake my enjoyment of it as I liked it. 4. Which conventions of the genre do you recognize in the text? Theyre no variants in camera angles or shots, but the bottom line is that the video has performance elements, with the disjuncture Genre on top. So although it follows minimal conventions it still fits a genre category. 5. To what extent does this text stretch the conventions of its genre? Greatly as mentioned above, with it pushing conventions and almost removing itself from any real genre category. 6. Where and why does the text depart from the conventions of the genre? Theyre no changes in camera angles and no cuts. It is filmed very basically and could be done with just one camera. 7. What sort of audience did you feel that the video was aimed at (and how typical was this of the genre/style of music)? People who like something a bit different and are open to things that dont follow conventions. The video didnt even feature the Black Keys, detracting the focus from them and on to the music and the video. It is aimed at people who are more interested in the style of things, than those who are creating it. 8. What sort of person does it assume you are? A very open minded person when it comes to the media and one that takes everything with a pinch of salt. 9. What assumptions seem to be made about your class, age, gender and ethnicity? It presumes you are of a young age, with an open mind, male or female. Ethnicity could be put as black because the videos star is black, but this would be wrong to say this would appeal to one ethnic group more than the other. 10. What interests does it assume you have?

It assumes you are interested in the music, as the star is not a famous person and the video is not materialistic. Therefore suggesting you should focus on the music/performance as opposed to The Black Keys themselves. 11. What relevance does the text actually have for you? The only relevance for me is that I like the song, otherwise the video would lose its appeal. 12. What knowledge does it take for granted? That you like the song, if you didnt like the track you would just be watching a random man dancing outside! 13. To what extent do you resemble the 'ideal reader' that the video seeks to position you as? I like the song, anybody that likes the song is an ideal viewer, it just depends whether the viewer has an open mind or not to what they are watching. 14. Are there any notable shifts in the video's style (and if so, what do they involve)? No. 15. What responses does the video seem to expect from you? It wants you to laugh and enjoy it, as well as sharing it with others. Before watching it again and again for enjoyment. 16. How open to negotiation is your response (are you invited, instructed or coerced to respond in particular ways)? You are simply invited to enjoy it, if you dont you stop watching. If you enjoy it, then you can watch it again and again. 17. Is there any penalty for not responding in the expected ways? If you dont enjoy it you dont watch it again and warn people not to do so. 18. To what extent do you find yourself 'reading against the grain' of the text and the genre? Not at all, you either love the video or you hate it. It is a marmite video. 19. How typical do you think this video is of Music Videos? It is not very typical at all hence the mixture of disjuncture and a bit of performance, with very few conventions used.
